My sister's house was close to the see and it was just a few walking steps to the beach. I was staying with her before my marriage. We had this pleasant activity each year when all of us would go cockles collecting. The cockles would come ashore and so we did not have to go deep inside - just upto knee deep of water. It was so exciting when we felt those cockles in the water. We would just grab them and collect them. Those were the days. Ofcourse we would then count and see who got the most. Cockles are cooked in several ways. Do you eat cockles? How do you cook them?

They are rich in calcium They are very costly if you buy it (the place we reside now, it is costly). But it may be available on cheap price near to sea or lakes. Hubby's sister in law tried to cook this when we visits native place as my children are fond of this.

I have found that they are very nourishing. Once when I was very weak after an attack of fever I was given its soup to drink and its flesh to eat. That restored my health. However, they were of different shape and collected from a riverbank.

What you get in the river do look different. They are smooth on the outside. We get them here. The fisherfolk come selling them but these days they are very expensive.
