How am I supposed to find a phone number?

United States

This new thing where phone books are becoming a thing of the past, and we have to get phone numbers online, is absurd. I tried using both Whitepages dot com, and Switchboard dot com, and both of them require a premium (paid) account to access the phone number!!!!! How am I supposed to get phone numbers without an actual phone book, if the online version won't show me the number? I ABSOLUTELY will NOT pay those scammers money for what is supposed to be a free service. If anyone knows how to look up phone numbers for free online, please let me know. I've searched all over, and can't find a good free site.

Same problem here. I try doing a few different Searches and see if I come up with anything there. Sometimes I am lucky. Only thing I have left is an out of date Yellow Pages but its still valid.

Yes, our phone books are a few years old too. It's not right for them to charge for online information, when the printed phone books are free.

@connierebel At the moment we are very lucky to have this tattered old yellow pages. I do not tell anyone round here that I have got it either otherwise I might have them all after it.

I think we can look up numbers here in the UK on line. I do that rather than pay the exorbitant prices the phone companies charge.

Anywho is free for looking up US landline phone numbers, though they do charge for other personal information. More and more people, however, only have cell phones and, as far as I know, there is no easy way to find those for free. I don't know how up to date the Anywho site is, however.

I prefer phone books too - putting our numbers online increases our chances of getting lots more spam calls @connierebel

That's true. But it's the phone companies that are putting the information online, rather than print up phone books. It's not right to charge for that information, if the phone books were free.

For many areas, yes, but they are so small now there's hardly anything in them except a few businesses.

Obtaining a telephone number is certainly more difficult these days than it ever was in the past.
