I think it's kind of a 'placebo'---certain sounds subconsciously reminding you of 'a sudden cool-breeze' (activating "goosebumps" on your skin). Is that about right?

It is not a placebo, the goosebumps and tingles is caused by the 3dio mic they use, which is a very sensitive mic that makes sounds cause tingles. Most "Asmr" videos that doesnt use sensitive mics dont have any effects for me.
Also asmr doesnt work with speakers, it works with headsets and earbuds.
