Another really, really, really cute breed of sheep - the Valais Blacknose

Following the interest shown in my post about Herdwick sheep, I felt sure you’d all fall in love with a Swiss breed known as the Valais Blacknose or, in German, the Walliser Schwarznasenschaf. This domestic breed originated in the Valais region of Switzerland. It is a dual-purpose breed, meaning it is grown for both its fleece and for meat. The coarse wool is used for items such as mattresses or carpets. You can see it is well-named. Both rams and ewes have horns. We are going to Ireland in a fortnight. I wonder if I could smuggle a small one back to Australia in my suitcase. The image is from Wikimedia and is free to use. Here is the link to the post about Herdwick sheep. http://www.mylot.com/post/3063182/beatrix-potter-peter-rabbit-and-herdwick-sheep

@Marilynda1225 - I also wondered if Herc would be upset if @JudyEv brought home a cute little companion as a pet!

@DeborahDiane @Marilynda1225 I'd quite like to get him a friend but the last 'friend' he had was a real bully so I'm a bit reluctant now.

My dream was to look at a huge pile of them in a New Zealand prairie and I got to see that. They looked like balls of cotton from a distance. One could not see what breed they were as we were in a bus going past that prairie - miles and miles of it.

@DeborahDiane Are you planning on a trip there. They are there grazing along the road on miles and miles of prairies skirting on one side and hillocks on the other.

The Valais looks like a teddy. It is an old and not very good breed for a sheep farmer, but it is perfect in a garden as a pet sheep. It would do a nice friend for Herc.

I think for a few minutes Herc wouldn't know what to think. He would probably want to hide behind us while he worked things out.

Wow! This sheep is a beauty! @JudyEv No wonder it comes from Switzerland with so much fleece on its body. Have been to Switzerland ; but didn't come across such a beauty. Perhaps found in the countryside. Have a great trip to Ireland.

@JudyEv Perhaps, I don't know really. Indeed yes, one is tempted to cuddle these. However, would be afraid of the pointed horns!

My nephew has stud Saanen goats and has just purchased a miniature buck. Over here they have three different types of very small goats - pygmies, miniatures and Nubian dwarf goats. They are all very cute.

what an interesting looking sheep. Not seen one like it before. So you are heading our way soon then. The weather is warming up a bit now so hopefully it will be nice for you! Safe journey if we do not hear from you before you go and have a great time here in Europe!

What a furry sheep! Last night I was watching the Amazing Race, a show where contestants go from country to country and in Greece, the contestants were wearing a goat to give the groom as a present.

It is isn't it? Some breeds the lambs are born black but turn white later - the same thing with some horse breeds.
