Sculptures in the middle of nowhere

@topffer recently wrote a post entitled ‘My trains to Lourdes and back. I’ve put the link below. The photo he posted with his discussion is a sculpture, a self-portrait of Antony Gormley. This reminded me of a post I did in Bubblews and which I’ve edited here in case you’d like to read it.
Gormley’s installation is entitled ‘Inside Australia’ and is situated on Lake Ballard, a salt lake some 50 kms from the small town of Menzies in Western Australia. Under the fierce sun, heatwaves shimmer and bounce on this most remote of 'art galleries'.
A conical hill rises out of the middle of the 10 square kilometre salt pan. It is an important breeding ground for the banded stilt whenever there are heavy rains. The white, crackling salt is interspersed at intervals by strange, stick-like figures, the creations of British sculptor, Antony Gormley.
The installation was commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Perth International Arts Festival. Gormley was asked to create 'something different' for the Festival. Using a mathematical process, he scanned, by laser, the nude bodies of 51 people. Some were volunteers, others were approached by Gormley and asked to take part. The bodies were mapped in three dimensions. Cross sections were taken, reduced by two thirds and the contours connected, leaving an inner core. This was used to create a sculpture.
The figures are full-size, revealing attitudes and emotions in an abstract shape. They stand stark and tense against the whiteness of the lake. The figures appear to advance and recede with the heat waves. They are not near each other and the overall effect is eerie and alien. Just as the Eiffel Tower was to have been removed, so too were the figures meant to be taken away. Such was their attraction that they have been left on the lake to enthral and bemuse locals and tourists alike.

@LoriAMoore I can't imagine what the 'model' thought when she saw how she was depicted!

@JudyEv I love the concept and I must see if we have anything like it nearby.

When we visited Uluru, there was an installation of thousands of LED lights all set up in the desert. That was a bit different too. Here is the link if you're like to read about it
While we were at Uluru in central Australia recently, we attended the Field of Light, an installation of some 50,000 slender stems crowned with frosted glass...

The hill in the background looks like a humongous anthill if the tree weren't on it.

It's strange that it is such a conical shape. I'm not sure now how it was formed.

@JudyEv - How fascinating that these stick figures are spread out around that salt lake. I am sure it is a very eerie experience to see them!

@JudyEv - I love coming upon things unexpectedly. I think I get a childish delight from things like this!

@DeborahDiane It would certainly be very weird to come across this unexpectedly. I wonder, too, how Gormley came up with the idea to put them here. It does seem the perfect setting for them.

Random sculptures left in the outback for the pleasure of those who would see them there. Nice! Whoever thought of that is a genius!

cool. My mother used to live in Greenville, North Carolina. She often talked about seeing a statue of a giraffe in the middle of nowhere when she went to work.
