Good Morning!

Good morning myloters. It is a beautiful day here in the UK albeit very cold this morning. This weekend it is going to be very cold with the possibility of snow tomorrow. A cold front is blowing in from Russia. There is a saying we have here in the UK. "When the north wind doth blow we shall have snow"! This was a nursery rhyme from around the 16th century hence the old English "doth". Indeed when the wind does blow from the north the temperatures are noticeably cooler but in winter it is very cold. So on Thursday I returned to work after being off for six weeks. I only went in for a couple of hours each day just to work myself in and catch up with stuff. It was quite difficult walking around the hospital as so many people were stopping me and asking me where I had been as they had not seen me for ages so they were quite shocked to hear why I had been off. It was nice to meet up with my colleagues. I have a new Doctor join my team while I was off. Oh lord to me he looks about 14. I guess it is the same when you meet a Policeman they look so young. It makes you feel like asking if their mothers know they are out on their own!. Listening to the radio this morning I heard that Americans are preparing their tax returns. I do not know anything about this as this for me is all taken care of by the government. I do not have to fill in any forms or anything like that. Perhaps you can enlighten me what this is all about. Does this mean you have to pay all your taxes back dated for the year? Or is it a means of showing what you have earned over the year which will determine your tax code for the next year? Are your taxes taken at source? I know if you had to settle your tax bill at the end of the year I do not think I could be so disciplined to save money to pay a tax bill. I know a lot of people were talking about it last year saying they had to prepare the tax bills. It would be fascinating to learn about this. If you are due to pay your tax bills now I hope they are not too overwhelming. Have a nice cosy weekend. This photo is for one of mylot friends who is about to go on a cruise. Just to get her in the mood although I dare say she will need much encouragement. I am sure she is excited as the days are approaching fast!

Gary I think that "Tax Return" is simply a tax form to report your income (minus deductions) to the IRS. The forms are used by the tax authorities to assess liability for tax. We send our forms a bit later, before the end of April.

Right got you! Thanks Anna. I don't think I have ever had to do that it is all taken care of at work!

@garymarsh6 I do this every year here in Switzerland. We were self employed first, now we are retirees and we have to fill the forms. I think that in the United States also those who are employed must feel the forms in person.

I am glad that you made a quick recovery from detached retina operation! Here we adopt a value-added tax.

Yes we have that too. Nearly everything is taxed apart from Fresh air.... I should say that quietly as it may give them ideas to tax that too!

@Tampa_girl7 I make people laugh at work. I tell them I have been doing this job for 40 years this year which is surprising considering I am only 37! It takes a while for the penny to drop with some of them!

Yes, just ordered a bit more heating oil for delivery early next week - can't imagine what a mess we'd have if the oil ran out and water pipes started to freeze as a result. I remember when £250 would have nearly filled our oil tank, now it barely takes it 2/5ths up the gauge.

@garymarsh6 Makes my heating oil bill pale in perspective - I reckon I've put in £750 since 29-November, including the £250-worth ordered today, that should last about 6 weeks in the winter, maybe less if the temperatures plummet enough to need the heating on through the night as well...

Heating costs are astronomical. Our gas is around £900 a quarter. Outrageous eh!

It's just above freezing here on the Canadian east coast. A bit of snow fell overnight and the day is supposed to be a mixed bag....snow, rain, sun and cloud....

@garymarsh6 The extra cold weather should impede the growing of grass and hedges and postpone the need to cut them I hope. I’m in hospitals for non-medical reasons and it scares me to see people so young wearing stethoscopes as necklaces. It would give me greater confidence if they at least presented themselves professionally i.e. no stubble.

We have to pay our taxes quarterly. Most file once a year. Most people file their tax returns based on the previous year's earnings minus deductions. We pay federal and state income taxes, and need to use a tax accountant.

I know what you're saying about doctors, policemen, etc looking like they've just got out of school. And then it's pretty embarrassing if they haul you over the coals for some reason.

wow, you don't have to fill your tax return ever? No wonder people want to go back to England after living overseas for a while.
