Is the ATM card now made not with magnetic tape anymore?

I a few hours ago with my older brother to the bank, and wanted to replace the damaged ATM card due to too many scratches on the magnetic tape part of the card. Then when we arrive at the bank, we take the queue number and when we are called by them, they make a replacement with a new card that uses the chip and there is no magnetic tape anymore there and very fast with just a few minutes the card can be used immediately and the old card is cut and thrown away.

Our cards have both the chip and the magnetic strip, they are also contactless, you wave the card in front of the machine and you do not need to insert the card to pay.

@May2k8 In France we started using chips in 1995, but the magnetic strip stayed, for the old machines.

@LadyDuck because in Indonesia there has been a lot of copying of data at the ATM, so banks take action like this even though there are still many who have not replaced the card. Our bank have plan in 2021 all card must using chips.

The strip is still in use as many card readers and ATMs still read the strip when swiped. But they are largely replaced by chips. In fact most banks here request customers to change their card to a chip based card as soon as possible.

@mesbakh As long as it can still be used, it seems that it doesn't need to be replaced, but if the bank really tells us to do it, it should be replaced.

that's good, banks in Indonesia are starting to implement a system of magnetism converted to chip. It will slowly remove magnetic so it's not easy to copy.

Now everything is very practical, we need not be afraid to put it near a magnet anymore.

before we only had the strip, then the chip appeared so that both of them were used. Then there are times when only chips are needed.
