“You must remember this A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh The fundamental things apply As time goes by” A legendary standard. A timeless classic. You know the scene from “Casablanca” (1941). Rick (Humphrey Bogart) is agitated by the appearance of lost love Ilse (Ingrid Bergman) at his nightclub and snaps at Sam the piano player, “Play it.” He never says the oft quoted “Play it again, Sam” in the movie. Dooley Wilson launches into his immortal rendition of “As Time Goes By.” The song was not written for “Casablanca.” Herman Hupfeld wrote “As Time Goes By” for the 1931 Broadway musical “Everybody’s Welcome.” Warner Bros. had the rights and stuck it in a movie that did not seem important during production. Wilson began performing at 12 in minstrel shows and was a drummer, bandleader and actor. “As Time Goes By’ ranked second only to Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow” on the AFI list of greatest movie songs. “Casablanca” is generally regarded among the three greatest movies ever made.

@JohnRoberts — you know one of my favorite, and to me funniest, lines in that movie? When Rick tells Louis, “Oh, I see. Gestapo spank.” It’s so funny, and so deadpan, and so perfectly delivered.

Did you know that Warner Brothers tried to sue the Marx Brothers for titling their film "A Night in Casablanca"? Groucho was duly incensed and wrote a series of very funny letters to the Warners, pointing out that unless a Warner had actually been the founder of the town named Casablanca they could not copyright the name! He then stated that the word "Brothers" had been used by the Marxes before the Warners!
