You know the scene from “Casablanca” (1941). Rick (Humphrey Bogart) is agitated by the appearance of lost love Ilse (Ingrid Bergman) at his nightclub and snaps at Sam the piano player, “Play it.” He never says the oft quoted “Play it again, Sam” in the movie. Dooley Wilson launches into his immortal rendition of “As Time Goes By.” The song was not written for “Casablanca.” Herman Hupfeld wrote “As Time Goes By” for the 1931 Broadway musical “Everybody’s Welcome.” Warner Bros. had the rights and stuck it in a movie that did not seem important during production. Wilson began performing at 12 in minstrel shows and was a drummer, bandleader and actor. “As Time Goes By’ ranked second only to Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow” on the AFI list of greatest movie songs. “Casablanca” is generally regarded among the three greatest movies ever made.
