The recently concluded harvest festival in India is known by different names in different parts of the country. In Assam it is called Bhogali Bihu. The name itself tells us that it is a time to eat. Though the customs and rituals may vary, the underlying theme is celebration of a good harvest.Somethink akin to Thanksgiving. The kitchens are transformed into a goodies producing workshop. Apart from the feast of meat, fish and vegetables, the dominant food is sweets called pitha. These pithas are again of various types, made from rice, dals or lentils, sweet potatoes, jaggery, coconut, sesame seeds just to name a few. People end up gaining a few pounds in the week that follows. Photo..Some of the goodies

Thank you. That was on the 14th of January. Everything is unputdownable and so the inches do add up where I don't want them

@LadyDuck okay. After frying does your recipe ask you to dip them in sugar syrup. These were made like that

That's the trouble with feasts. It's hard to keep your weight down if there is a lot of good food around.

It was good to know that most the Indian states celebrate festivals in a different way on January 13-16. For us, (Kerala) it was Makarasankranti).

That is what is so nice with the majority of festivals. They come with lots of foods prepared. Good thing, I am not fond of sweets so, I will not get fat during your Bhogali Bihu.

Those are called til pitha...That is a delicacy which requires expertise.Dry Sticky rice powder is put on the tawa and flattened out like dosa {but mixture is not wet like dosa} and then filled with roasted sesame seeds and jaggery or coconut and sugar and then rolled . The rolls come out naturally. But it is difficult to get the hang of it. Nowadays they are being made with black rice also

Impressive array of foods. I would think that giving thanks can happen at any time of the year but my favorite kind of 'thanksgiving' are the many harvest festivals around the world.
