Not only do I have a friend in Phil the Pheasant, during the summer I also have Billy the Bullock.
He was rescued from a slaughterhouse by my local animal sanctuary and each summer he and his mates come onto the meadow at the bottom of my garden to graze. This picture was taken by me when my partner was just inches away from him picking cherries off our tree.
It's amazing that these animals suffer huge abuse at the hands of farmers or slaughterhouses and yet, just by receiving a little human kindness, they begin to trust again.
I've learned so much from watching these beautiful, gentle creatures over the last few years. They form bonds with each other and they have individual personalities. This realisation was the final nudge I needed to give up eating meat.

I am glad there is someone or someones to protect them from the enemies that abuse them.
