Why Hot Cross Buns Make Me Cross

I ordered my groceries online and my supermarket delivered them this morning. Amongst the things I ordered were some fruit teacakes - for those who are not from the UK, these are very light bread rolls containing dried fruit. Over here we have them toasted. However, one or two of my items had to be substituted. I received a large tin of pink salmon instead of a small one (great, I got twice as much for the same price!) and Hot Cross Buns instead of fruit teacakes. Bearing in mind that Hot Cross Buns have religious significance and, in the Christian calendar, they're eaten at Easter I can't understand why these are available all year round. I'm not a religious fanatic but this really gets my goat!! You wouldn't expect to buy a Christmas cake in June so why have Hot Cross Buns all year round???

It seems hot cross buns are available just about all year round nowadays. It gets my goat too.

@olliesmum Do they believe in Easter? I had an idea they went by the Old Testament.

@JudyEv Well she did come to my door just before Easter last year and asked if I'd like to attend their Easter Sunday service but I politely declined so not sure precisely what they believe. She's a lovely lady but I was brought up Church of England and I wouldn't drop my faith just because someone knocked on my door and tried to sell me another. She knocked on my door towards the end of the summer and handed me a leaflet about faith when someone passes away. She'd remembered my mum had dementia but thankfully she's still going strong and will, hopefully, live to have her 90th birthday!!!

I'm amazed that churches haven't tried to stop it. I spoke to a Jehovah's Witness the other day when she knocked on my door and I told her how I felt ... she said she hadn't ever thought about it!!!

I don't know but whenever I see that bread, the nursery song plays on my head.

Unfortunately they no longer cost 1 a penny, 2 a penny ... more like a pound!!!

I noticed they were in the shops the moment Christmas was over. They are no longer a seasonal treat at all.

@olliesmum I also found when I ordered one time groceries online I had to substitute things. That is why I go to the grocery store myself to see what they have. That is nice that you got a big salmon for the same price. I also like salmon and have two small cans and one big one.

I didn't know they were available all year to be honest. It does seem odd. Are you sure they haven't just brought them out after Christmas like they have done with all of the Easter eggs? That really annoys me - when you just get over Christmas and you go into the store and there are shelves and shelves of chocolate eggs.

We've had them during the summer. And I'm with you when it comes to Easter eggs. Unfortunately our religious festivals don't seem to have any meaning these days. Christmas is all about spending more money than you can afford and Easter's all about eating chocolate. Sad sign of our times.
