Spur of the Moment Trip to See our Fixer Upper

I have been absent for a couple of days, I decided to go on a little road trip. A few months ago, my husband and I bought a house. It was listed on Redfin, and the price was quite reasonable, so we went to look at it. The first time we saw it, it looked super nice from the outside, and it is on a third of an acre, with a fenced back yard. Looks can deceiving, the inside of the house was pretty hammered. In fact, there is a huge hole in the middle of the kitchen floor. Besides that, the whole house stunk to high heaven. Apparently they had pets that had been doing their business on the carpeted floors. Still, the house had a lot going for it. New roof, new dual pane windows, and a fairly new heat pump, plus that big fenced back yard. It was bank-owned. We made them a low offer, and they took it. My hubby has been over there working on it, while I have been in a rented house 100 miles away. I had not seen the house in several weeks, so I decided to pop over to see how things were going. I must say, I was happily surprised. Even though the floor has not been fixed. Just getting all that stinky carpet out of the house, along with other assorted trash, made a huge difference.

Did you take any before pictures? Even if you didn't you could still take some now, or your husband can. If I ever can update my home, I'd take pictures to see whether I could get approved for some type of magazine if nothing else. The rented house you've been staying at is it the one you've been living in, or did you rent one closer to this newer one? Has your husband been sleeping in the newer one he's fixing up? If so, did he take any clothespins for his poor nose?

@norcal So once he's remodeled the house you bought you both will move there or you intend to use it as a rental for side income?

@MarshaMusselman We actually have several of these cheap fixers in that same area. We will end up living in one of them and renting the others.

I'm still living in the house I rented when I moved to North Carolina. Even though it's far away, moving twice would just be too hard. My husband is staying in the fixer now, but that's a recent arrangement. I even spent the night there myself last night.

It's amazing how much less housing costs here compared to California, where we came from.

@norcal Speaking of ... California! I live here. My parents in law are in North Carolina, & they're telling my fiance & I go to move there cause a down payment on a home here literally is a brand new house there.

I hope the remodeling does as quickly as possible and as inexpensive as possible. Everything seems to be a little more expensive than what we thought. But I bet that just taking out the trash made a huge difference. Take an aromatic candle the next time you go

Leaving the windows open during this pleasant time of the year is helpful too.

This will probably end up a rental, but who knows? Maybe someday we will live there.

@norcal Maybe he was in the repair business, or bought the old ones to sell them later. I can't see that he would have owned that many in a lifetime even if he never through anything out.

Yeah well, I don't have Chip and Joanna's phone number. The before picture would have been pretty bad though. For some reason, the previous owner had left over 100 old (heavy) TVs in the house.

Sounds like you will have a great house when you finish. Are you planning to move into it or rent it out?
