I Outsmarted The Rat!

In the office, there are rats. My officemates whenever they arrive in the morning would find out that the wrapper of whatever unopened chips and pastries they have at their side tables, were already with holes . As for me, I have the tin can in the picture , to keep the crackers and whatever left-overs of snacks I ate . In addition , I keep my still unopened chips and other snack items at the side drawer of my table which I always make sure to be closed. I outsmarted the rat by that. However, today, I found out that the brown paper of the still unripe Indian mangoes I placed under my table the other day, has holes on it. But the rat didn’t eat the mangoes that were a bit ripe already. I ate the 4 of them for snack a while ago. But I do still have unripe mangoes in brown paper though I placed them on a high open drawer. I hope the rat will not eat any of them when I come back on Monday. I wonder how we can eliminate those rats in the office.

You can get them by putting coke a cola out where they can drink it.

@hereandthere They cant pass gas from either end. So it will kill them. Any soda will work, but coke causes the most gas build up. I have used it in the barn many times when we would get large rats. If the cats do drink it they are fine. Unlike if they eat a poisoned rat.

We also have that kind of a problem since we are in an old building office that is why rat infestation is common. Many of my co workers will see that their food are partially consumed by them. I even saw one that he boldly crossed along the hallway in our office. i do not bring food or leave food at the office because they seem to be attracted to it. There was even one table that the rat defecated on top of her office table and only knew it Monday when we are back in the office. The bldg admin has warned us that we should avoid leaving food in our workplace and discourage us eating in the workplace so that the smell of food would not stick to the office and rats would be attracted to the food scent left.

Before, we are prohibited from eating inside the office, because any remnant would attract rats. However, whether our workplace is clean, they still would pester the work places.

@SIMPLYD That is true. They would still be there no matter how you avoid food in there. Especially when the building is already old they would love to stay there.

I already mentioned about the problem in my office too. We never keep foods in office but feared on cutting wires of computers . Now the rats are not seen, dont know where the disappeared . We keot a glue trap but they cleverly avoided it.

@Sreekala We have tried that rat glue., Though, they look pitiful because they don't die. You have to kill them still. So, we don't like it when at home , there are mice before. We used rat poison.

I assume they are just mice since make small holes on snacks, it's very easy to capture and kill them, just buy fly paper and put the snack bait in the middle of the paper, just make sure there are no other foods lying around, it would catch several but I must warn you that it's not a very humane way to get rid of them.

@louievill Poisen indeed because those traps crap, They so built for their environment, some tough sob's Hey dodge it what ever that at least tells them they trying to kill them do not come back . Traps predators they think they can outsmart and they can for most part and why when do get caught in trap because they halfway out smarted it. Then left to listen them to suffer.

They tend to go there because of the food there. Your strategy to keep your food in a closed can is best. You can try using some rat bait or rat poison?

If there is rat problem, one should not leave food unattended there. That might attract more and more of them.

Yes, that's why, there is a memo now of never leaving foods in the open , when leaving the office. One will be penalized when they do that.

@SIMPLYD If practised well, it will really have positive effects. Unattended food in night attract them and they find a good breesing ground around these food.

Wow, you have no rats n your place? You are so lucky. But in our house in my mother's , they have no rats. That's because we have lots of cats outside the house. So they got one small kitten that they will train to eliminate waste in a bag of sand so, he can stay inside the house, because mice are said to be away when there is a cat.

They already tried the mouse trap. It caught one, but the next time no more. The rats know what they are for already.

@rakski I had two during lunch break - the ripe ones, since I had an early lunch at 10:00 am. during our morning snack time. Then just a while ago, during our mid afternoon snack time, I had two "manibalang" ones but this time I dipped them in Barrio fiesta spicy sauteed bagoong. So, yummy! I bought the bagoong from Puregold just downstairs during lunch break.

Yikes! Food should not be left there at all and brought in on a daily basis, after the exterminator comes. Very unhealthy.

Yes, I very much agree. That is why, I put my chips that are not yet fully consumed in their packs and seal them and put them inside that can. That way, the rat cannot eat them.

wow, rats are big. here at home, we do not have rats, but mice. these ''mabait'' rodents, we do not curse them because they might destroy our things. once, there was a big rat lying on the floor in front of the ref; it ate some crushed coumadin tablets so it internally bled. rats are so gross; mice are cute. heheheh.

@ridingbet I think so too. Rats are the big black ones, specially those in the field, while mouse are those that pester houses.

@SIMPLYD there is internal bleeding already once the mouse goes out in the light. coumadin causes blindness due to bleeding. i think there is a difference between a mouse and a rat. a rat is a bigger rodent and it grows bigger too, it has also a short snout. the mouse is a smaller rodent and has a longer snout. so, i think the mouse does not grow as big as a rat.

I think they are common problems of offices, because some employees, aren't responsible eaters. They just leave their left overs in the trash where the mice can smell them

You may have to use sticky traps or more humane traps but yes if they eat poison they die in the walls and there would be smell. Perhaps just call an exterminator, they know what to do.
