Went to my boyfriends family reunion today

Today my kids and I headed out to my boyfriends uncles house for their family reunion. I picked up his sister on the way who needed a ride. We were following my boyfriends other sister but she was driving over the speed limit and my van is in bad shape so it started skipping really bad when I tried to keep up. The sister in my car knew the way so I slowed down to 45mph. We made it there much slower but safe and sound about 12:30. I took grapes and an orange dip to share which turned out pretty good. It was just cream cheese, fluff and orange juice concentrate. Quick and easy! I had a plate of pasta salad, potato salad, macaroni and cheese and a veggie burger. It was all delicious except the potato salad. They had made a yummy Pomegranate Vodka Lemonade drink I loved. Couldn’t taste the Vodka at all. One aunt upon meeting us hugged me (I hope I managed not to cringe, I hate being touched) then my daughter. She went to hug my son and he stepped about 2 feet back quickly and put his hands up by his head like a police had a gun on him lol. I apologized to her and told her has autism. They have a nephew who is nonverbally autistic so they understood. As soon as we were away from her I told my son I forgot to mention they are a huggy family and asked if he could try to at least shake their hands. He nodded which surprised me and then I saw him shaking peoples hands later upon meeting them so I was so happy. He only had one short bout of tears at wanting to go home saying to me he didn’t know why I made him come when I know he hates parties. I told him he needs to be out around people. He also grumbled a few times during a short walk in the woods saying that this was the worst day of the summer. Other then those two times which really weren’t to bad he did really well. We stayed over 4 hours and he usually melts down so bad after an hour that we have to leave so I was thrilled at this. My kids and I spent about 2 hours playing badminton. We finally found something we all enjoy it was such fun. That wasn’t favorite thing to play when I was a kid. It’s been probably 20 years since I played last and I did rather well especially with a sore shoulder. We are going on vacation tomorrow with my boyfriend and his son. It will be the first time we have ever gone on vacation together. I’m very excited and very nervous at the same time. The photo is of a neat clock at the house I was at today for the reunion. They had such neat decorations around their home and property.

@Tina30219 the reunion and vacation were both really nice. I wish we had stayed longer though at the reunion as left before dessert was served

It surely was hard for your son to shake hands. My husband has problems hugging, he hates to be hugged, he prefer not to be touched. You had a great reunion and the food sounds delicious. I also make the Pomegranate Vodka drink, it is refreshing in summer. I love this clock.

@LadyDuck I understand exactly how your husband feels. I enjoy my kids hugs and my boyfriend but that is it. Anyone else it makes my skin crawl. At his nieces graduation party I wasn't expecting his aunt to hug me and I was thankful no one was looking at me as I know I made an awful face. It was so nice of her to hug me and welcome me that way so I felt bad about my reaction even if no one saw it but me. My boyfriend said later they brought out a whole bunch of amazing desserts which made me wish I had stayed longer. The sweets are my favorite part of get togethers

@LadyDuck I always say to my children's fathers side of the family that he hates being touched but they would always pick him up and think it was funny and he would scream and cry so much after that we would have to leave. I wish they would have just listened but its hard when they just don't understand it's nothing to joke about.

@shaggin I have no problems, but I asked all my relatives never to hug my husband. Some understand, some think he is weird. What a shame you missed the desserts.

Sounds like you had a nice time at the reunion - your son did pretty well! I grew up with family not ever hugging - hugging is something I had to get used to later on in life. This is a clock based on Salvador Dali's painting - so funny but cool! Enjoy your vacation - I hope this first time vacation together will be wonderful !

@much2say I couldn't think of who the artist was but I could see the painting in my head from when I studied it in high school. I was thinking it was M.C. Esher so thanks for mentioning that. My family isn't huggers either but when I first started dating my husband's family they were very huggy and loud so it took a lot of getting used to. I am used to it now so I know when I go to their parties who will come up to me and hug me but being new to parties of my boyfriends family I wasn't expecting it. He forgot to warn me.

@shaggin Escher is cool too . The whole hugging thing was like learning a new culture - yah, it did take time for me to get used to too. Hugging "new" people is still sometimes hard for me .

@DianneN I am so happy with his progress. It is such a relief to see him doing better. I am very nervous about school but I think he will do better in public school now then he did before when he was smaller.

Do autistic kids always communicate their feelings, or keep it hidden?

@ihasaquestion they are all different but many do have a hard time explaining and understanding their feelings. Many don't talk at all so I am thankfully my son does.

@ihasaquestion thankfully my son can express himself so I haven't had to go through trying to get him to like other parents would so I have no advice on that.

@KrauseHome so far we have been staying at his parents house in the two guest room with his son out in a camper. Not sure if we are going to be camping or not since we only have until Friday left here.

The food sounds wonder, my ex's family was like that, lots of hugging, and a lot of parties. How long have you been together? Your vacation should be fine, have a good time.

@CookieMonster46 my children's fathers side of the family is very huggy. I am used to them but being around new people it'll take getting used to. My boyfriend and I will have been together off and on for 7 years in December.

Glad his other sister riding with you knew the way and great to hear you all made it there and back safely. Oh yes, I am not a hugger either. That is very good your son is opening up and that you all got to stay for 4 hours without any major meltdown! It's been a decade since I played badminton, it is a fun sport! Have a wonderful vacation tomorrow. Hope you all have lots of fun!!
