I saw the word 'erudite' this morning and it was familiar to me, but I couldn't remember its meaning. So I did some research to become more erudite about 'erudite'! This word is defined as having wisdom or knowledge that is gained by studying. So, a person doesn't necessarily have to possess a high IQ or a college education to be considered erudite. He or she just has to know much about a certain subject, due to the hard work of learning about it. Have you heard this word? What topics are you highly knowledgeable about?

I'm aware of this word but I'm not sure I'm particularly erudite about any subject.

@BloggerDi Haha - thank you. But do you think I'm erudite or maybe just appear so because I know a bit more than the average non-Australian myLotter?

Thank you @JudyEv. I think you are erudite about Western Australia's history, plants and wildlife!

@BloggerDi I know it as does @maluse . The next word you have to try out is tittynopes - yes it's a word, and it's not rude.

It's a familiar word to me - does that make me erudite to start with? About what topics am I highly knowledgeable? The problem there is that there will always be someone who knows a lot more than you about almost everything! If you take part in the BBC TV Mastermind quiz you have to know a lot about a very specific subject - that gets people to become extremely erudite about very little!

Thank you @indexer. I think you are probably erudite about words and you have an extensive vocabulary! The Mastermind quiz sounds like something I'd enjoy watching.

Erudite is one of the factions in the movie Divergent. Most of the Erudite people are teachers, scientists, doctors, mathematicians or those that require intelligence.

@BloggerDi the other four factions are Dauntless, Amity, Abnegation and Candor. Maybe you can add them to your list? :))

My father was erudite. He studied mechanics in the army and once he was honorably discharged, studied more and opened his own successful business. I’m pretty good with fashion, interior design, cooking, and literature. Hope you are all doing well.

Good word and one I am familiar with, but don't use much in every day speak. Picking up on the suffix 'ite' - I see it often in chemical terms such as sulphite and nitrite. I think it has something to do with the amount of oxygen in the compound, but I could be talking shite. I am more rud(e)ite than erudite, but in a nice way.

we jest don't use 'fancy' words much here'n the u.s. durin' normal conversation, so tend to ferget 'em 'ntirely 'r their meanin' 't the least. 've read such'n novels but don't recall havin' anyone say such 'round me. i plead ignorance'n all topics. 'tis easier that way, less 'rguments ;)
