A cute moment at the playground yesterday

We took the kids to a neighborhood playground yesterday morning. My buddy Tamir (aged 21-months) and I were playing, me "spotting" as he tested his climbing abilities on the play structures. He's a little dark-skinned black kid who sees me as a father figure. He plops down in my lap when we do stacky blocks together. A pretty Asian mom appeared with her (obviously 1-year-old) daughter, and the two of them (Tamir and the little girl) started playing together. What was sweet was that the two of them recognized each other as "same age" children and were instantly drawn to each other. The mom and I chatted (through our masks) about language development, etc., and then watched as Tamir and her little girl (mom told me she was 18-months old) decided to hug each other. 1 1/2-year-olds can be a bit clumsy, so we watched closely, to make sure nobody got knocked down and that no tears ensued. They hugged successfully, and then went back to playing. It was a lovely moment. I mention the races of the kids only because kids have no idea about such things as being Asian, white, black, or other. But they DO recognize when another kid is about the same age as they are. Have you had similar delightful moments with your kids, students, or grand-kids? I think we could ALL learn from watching the behaviors of children.

@TheHorse Why are you writing down the words he uses? What am I not understanding?

Tamir and I are always glad to see each other. I am writing down all of the words he uses. I love it when he uses two-word phrases like "come on!" (when I'm about to slide) or "pee boo!" (when we play peek a boo).

That's true, but it only lasts a short while. By the time he gets to about 4 or 5 he'll probably be saying 'I'm not playing with a girl'.

I think the "girls/boys are silly" age occurs a bit later.

I worked at three daycare centers, the children would single out other kids, their own age. One incident a little boy obviously followed a little girl, all over the place. She didn't seem to mind. After about a 1/2 day of this, he stood next to her, looking out the screen door. Without any warning, she gripped onto his face and twisted it! Oops, so much for that love relationship

Was she telling him she need some "space"? How did they interact after she "asserted herself"?

@kobesbuddy Did they play together, with appropriate boundaries, after that?

@TheHorse Ashley just needed some space, I'm sure! She simply let him know, enough is enough, your face stuck in mine! He acted shocked, of course didn't expect her reaction:(

@CarolDM Maybe he'll grow up to be just like me, an underpaid but semi-famous child psychologist. Eh, I'd rather he own a business.

I agree. The other day there was relationship advise from a young kid on YouTube. According to him, if you love a person, you fart. I wonder why we don't know such a simple thing. LOL. Kidding. Kids are great. Do go to the bank it is open only for half day - according to DE.

Child is the father of man though the meaning of this expression could be different. However, we can learn from children before they too change over time due to societal influences that are mostly negative.

@TheHorse The world will be a much better place if one generation comes out unscathed from the carry forward negativity. Now we tend to carry them forward from one generation to the next perpetuating the vicious cycle. .

I think kids are pretty pure (even if many of them learn "mine" as their second or third word). Then we adults mess them up.

@TheHorse That is so cute that he feels comfortable with you. That is so cute that the two kids played well together. That is so true. Kids just see kids as kids and are not at all like adults. I do not have kids so cannot say how they interact.
