My Parents Almost Missed Their Own Funerals!

Navy Military Funeral at Jefferson Barracks Veteran's Cemetery in St. Louis

In the last month, my life has been wracked by the deaths of several family members and close friends. We have attended the funerals of my husband's sister, my mother and father, some other relatives, and the husband of one of my dearest friends. I sat with my friend after her husband died, while we waited for the mortuary to pick up his body. In many ways, it has been a grim month. However, it was not without humor. My sister arranged for my father and mother to have their cremated ashes placed together in the same cemetery vault, and have a military funeral, in honor of my father's time in the Navy during World War II. The morning of the funeral, my sister and I went to the florist to pick up the flowers for our parent's funeral, as well for the funerals of two other relatives who were also being buried in the same Veteran's Cemetery on the same day. The cluster of funerals had been scheduled that way for the convenience of everyone who would be attending, especially out-of-town relatives. When we arrived at the cemetery, with three bouquets of flowers, my sister's ex-husband came up and asked her, "Did you bring the military flag?" My sister just stared at him for a moment. Then she responded, "Not only did I forget the flag, I forgot to bring mom and dad's ashes to their funeral!" Fortunately, two of my daughters were still back at my sister's house, and they were able to gather up the urns and flags and bring them to the cemetery ... arriving just minutes before the scheduled funeral. So, my parents almost missed their own funerals, but their granddaughters saved the day!

My sincere condolences for your loss. And, oh, my! That's a good story! Thank you for sharing it with us! I've been wondering where you've been. I'm sorry for the reason for your absence but am glad it wasn't because something happened to you or your hubby. (If I could reach you, you might have trouble getting out of my embrace for a little while.)

@DaddyEvil - Awww! Thanks, DE. It has been a very stressful few weeks. Thankfully, my husband has been doing OK lately ... not better, but not worse, either. That's a blessing. I do not think I could have handled one more thing right now. Thanks for offering me a hug. I have needed hugs, lately!

@DeborahDiane You're welcome... Good, I'm glad he's doing okay. I wanted to ask but didn't want to push more bad memories at you if anything had happened. I'll give you hugs any time you need them, Dearheart.

@DeborahDiane You're very welcome. I've gotten to hate traveling almost as much as Pretty. I hate being away from home for any length of time. I'm glad everything is fine at your home. It's nice to have people you can depend on.

@divalounger - Thanks for the hugs, and congratulations to your mother-in-law for being almost 100, and still able to laugh. May all of us be so lucky that we keep our sense of humor when we are that age!

@marlina - Thank you so much. I was fortunate to still have living parents when I am in my 70s. However, it still seems strange to now be the oldest generation of my family.

My condolences. It's not easy to have deaths in the family. But I love how you find humor in them. Reading the title, it was really hard not to read the whole discussion.

@changjiangzhibin89 - Thank you. Yes, haste makes waste ... and it would have been really embarrassing if we had not been able to get my parent's urns brought to us!
