He Ate the Whole Thing

Cal, our warehouse cat, is quite the hunter, and because our shop is pretty much smack dab in the middle of cornfields, there is no shortage of field mice around. So, during the day, most of the time, he tends to hunt. Ah, the life of a cat, I suppose. Today he caught one and seemed quite proud. Most of the time they are still alive when he brings them around, and he plays with them a bit before they seem to probably die of a heart attack or something. But the one he brought us today was quite dead, and he made it a point, as we were in the warehouse counting stock, to bring it around to all of us, proudly meowing. We did the usual praising. "Good job, Cal. Whatcha got?" And he seemed elated about that. He played with the dead mouse a bit more after his praise, tossing it into the air and batting it around. And then he found a comfortable little spot to eat him. And eat him, he did. The whole thing. Bones and all. There was nothing left. I, of course, find it entirely disgusting. But I guess to a cat this is like going to a fancy steak restaurant for a fantastic meal, and he surely seemed to enjoy it, finishing the meal up with some chop licking and cleaning his paws. Sometimes I feel bad for the mice that get caught in the hunt. But at the same time I also fully understand that's nature, and Cal is just doing what cats do. Cal on one his hunts:

Oh my goodness. I had a cat once, Momma Kitty, that brought them to me, still alive. She played with them but never ate them.

My Momma Kitty would bring moles, I don't know where she found them. @CarolDM

Our previous cats before: Garfol and Garkitty are good mice catcher. They never did eat them. Everyday they placed their victims on our living room for us too see and in return we did appreciate them.

Oh, when it comes to Cal. He eats the mice. We can hear him crunching on the bones. It's horrifying. lol

@Nakitakona He actually does. He is a bit more picky about those. But he does. Grayson on the other hand won't touch them.

Poor little mouse. Cats do like to tease them. I used to take the mouse off the cat, kill it and give it back. But then I'm a bit soft.

Do you ever give Cal something else to eat, like dry cat food and water?

@porwest He's adorable! We had a dog at the last place, where I volunteered. At the end of the day, the Activities Director would take him home for the night. The residents were happy to see Bailey each day, they loved him so much!

@kobesbuddy I think Cal really enjoys his little adventures. He seems quite happy when it is time to come home with me.

I reread your discussion and the thought crossed my mind, it could be that the mouse had just consumed some pot! That would make it quite an experience for both parties. As for eating the mouse bones and all, that comes from their days in the wild. They knew NOT to leave any trace of their presence around for any of their predators to detect that they had been around. That is the reason that today they still bury their excrement when they're done eliminating it. They usually dig a deep hole in the garden or where ever and do their poo or pee and then spend quite a bit of time making sure that it is sufficiently covered so that they can't be detected. That's what drives me nuts in the middle of the night when the brats use the litter box and spend forever covering what they do. As I nicknamed Petey "Digger O'Dell" and Freya "The Backhoe". Freya's new favorite game is "fetch". I'll toss her favorite toy (a catnip taco mouse) and she will run and fetch it and bring it back to me to throw again. I'm going to have to find another one soon as this one is wearing out. It would be great if she would be like one of our other cats from years back, that one would play fetch with a rolled up sock. They were easy to come by. Don't feel too bad for the mice, their life expectancy isn't too long to begin with, and with their natural predators they have an even shorter life span. Figure between cats, snakes, owls and other predatory birds, cars and so much more it is easier to be taken out by a cat.

Besides, the whole purpose of a mouse, I think, is to simply exist as a food source. lol. Plus, they breed like crazy, so their numbers are not impacted. I just hope if reincarnation actually exists, I don't ever come back as a mouse.

My cats used to bring birds, mice, snakes, lizards and more to us to show off their hunting skills. Even though they were well fed with both moist and dry cat food, they still liked to hunt and eat what they caught. Like you said, cats will be cats.

Same here. It doesn't matter what Cal has, when he gets something else, he seems quite content with it. lol

Cal did a fine job. Like you I find it disgusting when they eat it even though it is in their nature. Our first cat liked to bring us presents, and play with them then they disappeared. We never saw him actually munch on one but I am sure that he did.

This was actually the first time I actually witnessed him eat it. But eat it he did, and we had the same thing—the things would just disappear and our assumption was that he ate them. lol Now we know for sure.

It's 7:30 am; and my stomach is turning. I'm glad I don't have a cat or dog to bring me presents anymore, although we could use Cal when the field mice come into the house each year.

Cats are certainly good to keep the mouse populations down. lol. We definitely have less mouse issues in the office than before Cal.

I haven't had time to di into your posts. But will try to tonight. I want to see how your excursion in the camper went. Our dogs will catch stuff like that. Our pit killed a cat, shes also brought birds in, and one of them killed a squirrel recently.

Oh, that's impressive or as the surfer's say gnarly dude! I could use that cat around my house. That kitty could act as an extra mouse trap I had a cat who caught one mouse in all the years I had it. And he did let out a strange meow sound. After watching him bat the critter around for a while, I trapped the mouse and tossed it. My friend had cats that hunted squirrels. She would get part of the tail as a trophy on the front step
