Let me out! Let me out!

This is what I imagine that dark hen is saying. At the house-sit before the last, we had seven hens to let in and out each day. They were extremely tame and you could easily pick them up and give them a cuddle. At the last house-sit, there were six young chickens, two older ones sitting on eggs and two older ones just getting fat. These last two were very funny to watch when we’d let them out each morning. They seemed absolutely terrified of us and would do a lap of the yard then fly out the gate. You can see the darker one kicking up the dust as she goes. The one in front is one of the younger ones, wondering what all the fuss is about and thinking maybe she should hurry up a bit.

It makes me wonder why the two older hens are afraid of people.

We would just go slowly and quietly into the yard but it was the same mad scuttle every day.

Sorry. The darker one at the top of the photo is the mad one. I've corrected the text but they are both hens. Here is the white one that gets so flustered.

They are both very pretty looking hens. When my parents raised hens, they were just the boring white ones, and they were all kept on the second floor of the barn in the chicken coop, and never saw the outside except through the windows, which is sad.

That is a shame to see them cooped up too much. The caged birds we see worry me too as some have very tiny cages.

@JudyEv I agree, it isn't right to keep them cooped up. We only kept chickens for a few months during the winter time, and it was too cold to let them run wild and we had too many. Different times, different ways.

@Juliaacv Exactly. Some of our farming and animal husbandry methods were a bit iffy too I guess but everyone in the district used the same practices. As you say, different times, different ways.

I wonder if those two chickens in the picture might have some idea that they will be human dinners someday and that's why they run.

My grandma had chickens and we loved to round them up, for the night. It was important to put them inside, Grandma had fox and weasels that would feast on a stray chicken.

Foxes would have these in no time if they weren't penned at night. But you couldn't round up the two mad ones. You had to wait till they went into the shed in the yard and then just shut the gate.

How funny! I didn't know chickens would allow for picking up and a cuddle. That's cool. A cool pet, and with the price of eggs, a pet that could supply free eggs. I want a chicken. lol
