Our first experience with ChatGPT

Last night, our son in Ireland was telling us about ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer). I guess it’s a kind of artificial intelligence programme. There is much controversy concerning its use with passionate arguments both for and against its use. Some Australian schools are allowing it; some aren’t although all say it won’t be allowed in exams. We were able to share our son’s screen and watch as it generated all sorts of stuff such as what differentiates African music from Western music. Then, what elements need to be incorporated into a music programme for it to appeal to an Asiatic student. The answers were instant and scholarly, not at all amateurish. Digressing for a moment: We sometimes play Azul with our son, each on our own computers. It’s a board game where you have to place coloured tiles on a board. Another digression: Haiku is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, written in three lines of five, seven and five syllables respectively. Damian asked ChatGPT for a haiku about having fun with his parents playing Azul. That was all. He didn’t explain Azul in any way. Here is the result: Coloured tiles in place Strategising with my folks Azul fun galore I don’t want to argue the benefits or otherwise of ChatGPT but it was pretty impressive and I guess it’s here to stay. The photo was taken in Connemara, Ireland. We're not there yet.

A few people have been experimenting with ChatGPT on myLot, too. GAA has warned against using it here. Pretty and I have been talking about it. She's a moderator on a site and says it just "helps" people... I think it's copy/paste and not the users own thoughts... It has been interesting. Our "discussions" get a little heated. I just stop talking when she starts saying I'm anti-tech and a luddite...

@sallypup That's what's so funny to me about this... Pretty hates telephones and most electronics and only learned how to contact her boyfriend on Discord so they could talk and she wouldn't need to use her phone.

I've seen some of its poetry efforts & they were beyond lame. It does have writers all over the world worried though. I can't believe any school would allow it. I read a post the other day about a teacher on here reporting a kis for using it.

As haikus go, this was lame too I guess but it was instant and could have been worse. I agree it's a worry. There will be no need for copywriters if it takes off.

I know for a fact that sometimes that program (ChatGPT) gives incorrect information. It gets its info from scanning the Internet, compiling everything it 'knows' from there, and cannot judge anything on its own merits: which is to say it cannot tell if the info it passes on is actually correct or not, it simply 'knows' somewhere on the Internet, that has been stated. No one needed to explain Azul to it - it simply scanned the 'net to find out what it was. Parlour tricks - fancy parlour tricks, but that is really all it is. It can be fun to play with, but it operates within a boundary of rules it cannot escape and it can't 'learn' anything new on its own (i.e. make discoveries). Of course, since I have now found 8 people trying to cheat myLot using it to create discussions/responses, I don't have a very high opinion of it. Not its fault, of course - people will always misuse things.

@porwest Actually, ChatGPT isn't 'stealing' any more than you would be if you researched a subject online to your full capacity and then wrote an article about everything you learned. It does not 'copy' and simply regurgitate what it finds. That is why a plagiarism detector isn't triggered by something ChatGPT 'writes'.

Fair enough but if it scanned the net for Azul then I am bound at least to admire the speed of its search! I can understand it could become a huge headache for website admins.

@JudyEv I think there is another problem here that some are missing. If ChatGPT is stealing, and that is essentially what it is doing when it culls the Internet for what it needs, those of us who actually write our own work will be potentially subject to theft. My words can be regurgitated by ChatGPT into something that plagiarizes me and someone else gets to call it their own without having put in the time and effort. I think it also takes away from original thought, creativity and from having a perspective as well. Often times a story is interesting because of who is telling it, and how he tells it, as well as what his personal perspectives are, or observations are that make his version unique. It goes hand in hand with something I have been saying about the lack of originality in Hollywood and music. Either we're doing remakes in the movies and TV or every new song sounds like 15 others. I think this started to happen when kids stopped going outside to play and use their imaginations, instead having their heads buried in video games, computers and cell phones—all of these "toys" took away the need for being inventive and creative and pretending. And now we have an entire generation who can't come up with any new ideas.

I can really believe that that could be the case. The little I saw was very 'natural'. You'd be battling to tell it wasn't written by a 'real' person.

The first time I heard about ChatGPT was when Admin wrote a discussion about what not to do the other day. I'm the only one in my group (very small group) of friends who uses a computer daily, the others don't bother with them unless they have to.

Hello. My name is Horse. I cannot appreciate humor or love. But I can pretend to. I hope you feel a sense of warmth talking to me. @JudyEv - Wow! I have to say that I am impressed with the ability of ChatGPT to create that Haiku. My daughter showed me how to use the program to write an 800 word post on stroke symptoms for my blog, and she requested that it include citations. It did it perfectly, including reliable citations. However, I added some personal experiences with strokes, to make it seem more "human." It is amazing what ChatGPT can do, though. I may never write a full blog post again!

@JudyEv - Yes, it amazed me how fast it wrote that post on symptoms of strokes. I could not even type that fast, let alone look up the information and put in into a logical form! I think it will be very time saving. I really loved the Haiku it wrote for you. Amazing!
