the cost of housing is insane

Do you know how much a condemned, meth contaminated, formerly used as a meth lab house costs these days,.one that the county hasn't even cleared anyone to enter yet? $1.5 million USD. No one can even live in this yet, and the buyer will be responsible for the cost of clearing up the contamination, but it's still well over a million dollars because it's in a relatively okay neighborhood and has 6 bedrooms. No wonder people can't find affordable places to live around here if the uninhabitable places are going for this much!

This home will probably have to be gutted. There are tests that can be done to find out levels of contamination, but who would want to live there? Rents everywhere are ridiculous, but so is the price of homes in general. I see small, but very nice and new, 2 BR/1BA apartments renting for $2K or more per month. Not worth it. But a regular house, they are in huge demand and there really are not many available.

@MarieCoyle It's not enticing everywhere, and there are definitely some economically depressed areas. There are perks to being here, but boy are there costs.

Oh, I'm positive it will have to be gutted. I can't imagine how much money is going to have to go into it before it is habitable. The average price for a 1 bedroom apartment around here is over $3000 right now.

@spiderdust California living has always seemed so high to me. I know the weather is enticing, but it is not my spot. Fun to visit, but oh, the $$!!

absofreakinloutely. I mystery shop apartments and you likely wouldn't (or maybe you would) believe what they want for a basic one bedroom.

@spiderdust It depends anywhere from 1,300 to about 1.800. Although they look nice, you really don't have a lot of space in them. Those int he Northern Virginia area cost the most...they are a bit, notice I said a bit more reasonable downstate. I saw one in Arlington one time, that was upscale but it was like 2,000 for a one bedroom..say what? My mortage is much less than that for twice the space.

@snowy22315 I can see why the Northern Virginia ones cost more, they're where commuters to Washington DC will live (and that drives up the price).

I like to look and dream. I have my entire dream home all worked out in my head. One million dollars isn't worth what it used to be.

Remember when we thought that if someone had a million dollars, they'd be set for life?

I couldn't believe how much renting a house in Springfield was five years ago... A two bedroom house with no yard was going for $2,000 a month! That was 2/3 of my paycheck! We had already tried to find a house we could afford in Aurora and there was seemingly nothing here for rent. We lucked out when a friend told us about the house we're renting now. His landlady had this one sitting empty for almost a year. (We had been paying $385 a month for the two bedroom house with a nice yard for over 22 years.) This two bedroom costs us $450 a month and has a huge yard. And it's where I want to be. I do wish the house was bigger, though.

Housing costs are insane. The materials to fix houses also cost plenty and so do house taxes and insurance. Not sure how anybody survives.

It is nuts. I’m appalled at what I pay for with no hot water, black gunk in the bathroom sink (a sink I don’t use), and a front door that I can see two inches of daylight through the side. Not to mention carpet that heaven knows what previous tenants spilled on it. The fact that the land is worth that much is mind blowing.

I wrote about this the other day and no even responded except typical People must really hate me or just do not like subject and it does suck. Yet, all I still hear is capitalism is the greatest, really, no can even afford a roof over their head and do not get me started on food. Basic necessities people need to have to make all these rich fools go. lol

I might have missed your post on that, I'll go back and look. Yeah, I don't know what my family would be eating if it weren't for the free food donations from work right now. The other day, I saw ground beef on sale for $7/lb. I'm very thankful for the rotisserie chicken carcasses that my coworker saves for me and the fact that I have the skill and patience to strip off all of the remaining meat to use in casseroles. But not everyone can do that, not everyone has access to stuff like that, and so many people are struggling.

The initial cost plus all the added expenses to make it livable is nuts. Guess the only way that would make sense is if the other houses in that surrounding area sell for millions.

Well, they might. The average selling price in this area for a house is $1.4 million USD. It's really expensive here.

Having houses that close together is (sadly) pretty standard for this area. Those neighbors must have hated living next door to the previous owners!

That is insane, but I believe it. CA housing prices are nuts - absolutely bonker nuts. My friend and husband are looking for a house in San Diego - everything they are looking ends up to be close 3 mil - even houses that are literally just bare framework. Just can't do it. Her friends were doctors in the Bay Area . . . and they ended up moving to San Diego because they thought the Bay Area was way too expensive. And these are doctors (2 income doctor household) who are saying this?? Nut$ nut$ nut$!!!!

San Diego isn't much cheaper than San Jose, and some parts of it are actually MORE expensive. Which neighborhood the house is in makes all the difference.

The price of a house is really high right now. My cousin paid $8,000 for one of her rental homes and they just sold it for $300,000. She has a total of 17 houses left that they rent.
