I finally trekked my butt over to the Aldi store and I would say my impression was meh. Some prices are better. Some are not. Granted, that's pretty much anywhere you go. But it was not better enough overall for most items I would need to make a switch. But I did make note of some of the prices so if one of those items shows up on my list, I can get them there. Some deals I got; Avocados for 59 cents each which was dirt cheap, and none of them were "ripe." Evaporated milk, which I did need for 89 cents. Macaroni and cheese was only 55 cents per box and normally I pay 59 cents. I did check their kielbasa and it was cheaper than Ruler's $3.29. Although only 13 ounces instead of 14 ounces. It was $2.89. Broke down though that would make the equivalent cost of the Aldi one $3.11. Still way above my threshold price. I also got a tub of sour cream for 10 cents cheaper than Ruler, but the $1.69 price tag is still high for that considering a year ago I could get 16 ounces for 79 cents.

I bought a few of those .59 avocados the other day, they are excellent. I also got two tubs of their house brand sour cream for $1.49, and butter was $2.49, which was the cheapest I have seen anywhere around here for weeks and weeks. I did get 5 lbs of butter. I use it often to bake the endless cookies for the grands, and I just toss it in the freezer. When I was there--I think it was Saturday--they had ground sirloin for $3.99 as an in-store special. So I had to grab some of that, too. Usually in all the stores around here, if ground beef is on sale it's never the good stuff, it's the 70/30 which I try to not ever buy, just way too much fat.

I was actually surprised when I saw them how good they looked. Not already too ripe in the bin, and 59 cents is a price I have not seen on avocados in a long time. $1.49 would have been better for the sour cream. Mine was $1.69. As for the butter, was that real butter sticks or a margarine tub? I usually keep both in the house and I know the last time I bought real butter sticks I paid over $3. As for ground beef, granted I only ever buy 73/27, my threshold price is $2.99 and I won't ever pay a penny more. I don't mind the extra fat. Most of it cooks off anyway and I just drain it into a jar.

@porwest I don’t buy margarine, I use sticks of butter. I would be nice to have a threshold price of $2.99 but I haven’t seen that price for over a year now.

@MarieCoyle I always keep margarine. It has its purpose. At least to me. Even though I prefer butter.

@RubyHawk Please do, for the same reason as the coffee. I am a curious guy, you know. And that latter statement does not require being taken in any other context than the one in which I used it.

The price you mention is the price I have been seeing. But yep. 89 cents. I hope it's the same price where you are. Granted, it's Baker's Mark...but to me evaporated milk is evaporated milk. Let me know if you find it at that price.

I was so excited when Aldi came to my town and shopped there a lot for awhile. Then they started raising their prices, as all the other stores did, and the difference in travel costs vs prices made Aldi no longer worthwhile for me unless I shopped there on the same day I did another store I visit once a month. Everything is so pricey these days and my income stays the same.

One thing I have learned over the years when it comes to food shopping is that you have to know your prices, you have to run your pantry like a business, you cannot shop at one place, and you have to allow yourself time to replace things to take advantage of the best price and be willing to shop at multiple stores. Not all at once. But in a very planned way. If you don't do this you will always spend more on some items, and even if you find bargains, the benefit will be cancelled by what you didn't save on, saving you nothing in the end. I am a stock market guy. So I know a thing or two about dollar cost averaging. It applies to stocks as well as it applies to everything else we spend money on. And paying attention to it is what saves us money overall and maximizes the benefit of every dollar we have to spend for everything we need. It takes time. Sure it does. But so does going to work 40 hours a week to pay for everything. And nothing sucks more than working for wasted money. Many people only think of saving time now. They don't realize they'll have to work for what they spent above what they should have paid. And that will cost you MORE time. Not less. With no gain. Just my two cents.

@porwest I raised a pack of my own kids as well as a few spares. We had to keep a lot of pantry items. I am one of those weird people who do not like running out of items I use frequently. I also don't like to pay full price, and I usually can avoid that happening by planning ahead--if an item is on sale for a good price and it's something I use a lot of, you can bet I am going to get an extra or two for the pantry. I've done that for years, and I like knowing I have time to shop for a sale or a low priced item when I am going to be needing it--this works for me.

All prices here have been steadily going up although avocadoes are now cheaper. I guess there are plenty of them around at the moment.

I thought 59 cents was almost a steal. I was literally waiting for security to meet me at the door for stealing. lol

Everything is more expensive these days because of inflation. It is frustrating, really!

It has become harder and harder to find deals, that's for sure. And even many of what are deals now would be considered high compared to a year ago.

Most of our commodities are still skyrocketing and that includes the price of fuels.

At least I could buy avocados at the same price and they look pretty good. Tomorrow I check the sour cream at Aldi, I think it's in promotion at 90 cents, I could buy.

Hubs picked up a fully cooked smoked turkey at Aldi's today. It was expensive per pound; but we still saved a bunch over getting the complete turkey dinner at Giant Eagle...and the turkey was bigger. I'm glad you were able to pick up some deals. Have a great day.

Mac and Cheese is one of the things I refuse to get the bottom of the barrel for. But Aldi is nice. They just bought out the Winn Dixies here.
