Many service men and women owe their lives to their K9 service partners. I salute those brave K9s who risked their own lives to save our soldiers, many were seriously injured. I salute those k9s that risked everything to save our troops and those who loved them enough to give them a home for their retirement years.

They should be remembered today, too.

@rebelann My father had his horse shot out from under him. (He was already in the Polish Cavalry before Hitler invaded.)

I shouldn't have forgotten all the other brave animals used by the military forces.

My daddy fondly remembered Clyde who was a hero dog in Vietnam who alerted them to the enemy many times.

I saw several videos of different service dogs that were injured in the line of duty so I just picked this one, there were so many that gave so much to defend our troops.

@rebelann Oh I'm sure - there must be so many more that we never hear about . . . only a handful seem to make it to the news.

You're right. I saw a few videos about veterans with their 4 legged buddies, 1 about the cats in WW1 and a couple about horses in WW1 I've only seen one article about how dolphins were used during the Vietnam war.

BarBaraPrz also mentioned horses and of course there were the pigeons etc, they even used dolphins during the Vietnam and Persian gulf wars

Those handlers and their dogs would have very strong bonds.

You are correct. I wish I were the strong type of person who could handle a dog such as that but from what I've read those aren't the type of dogs just anyone should adopt.

Someone within these replies mentioned that there were also horses and then I checked and it turns out that during the Vietnam war they also used dolphins. I doubt any of these animals would've volunteered to help wage war except maybe pups.

I'm not sure if a combat war dog could be retrained to be a therapy dog.

@rebelann Amazing. So many animals could be therapy for so many, after the war.

I just read a book and one of the main characters was an ex military dog who was adopted by a family. Parts of the book revolved around the dogs perspective on things and it made it interesting and different.

Most of the time military dogs are only offered up for adoption to military handlers that know what the pup was trained for, retraining takes a lot of time, effort and love on the part of the hoomin.

The K9s that serve in the military and in the police force should all be given good homes when they retire. Have a great weekend.

I agree with you. All those animals that were used to help countries wage war had to be intelligent to carry out the tasks the militia expected of them, really sad how humans enslave other species to help carry out wars.
