Okay, Okay, We're Getting Sick of It

My wife told me this morning, "I'm just saying, I am getting sick of the Thanksgiving leftovers." I hear her. I agree with her. We ate full-on leftovers at least two or three days. I made a turkey noodle soup which was awesome. I made a turkey fried rice which was also good. We STILL have some left. Tonight I will cook something different, but will look at the sides and see if we can finish them off. There is still some ham. There is still some turkey. Dawn will make some turkey salad for sandwiches, which is the plan. Hell, I could make scrambled eggs tomorrow with some of the ham. This is always the only problem with Thanksgiving. It's always good food. It's just that after a while you just can't stomach it anymore, but you still don't want to waste it. And waste it I won't, let me tell you. How are you on Thanksgiving leftovers? Still going? Getting sick of it yet? How are you dealing with it?

I make a baked turkey every few months. After the initial meal with it, I pick it all off, and freeze the turkey meat in ziplocs. I make broth/soup. Nothing goes to waste from the turkey...and it's so handy to make chicken/turkey dishes when the meat is already cooked. We use the turkey for everything at times for homemade noodles, chicken/turkey lasagna, dumplings (both of my sons and grands love dumplings) tacos...I generally have cooked turkey or some cooked chicken in the freezer. Dressing freezes well, too. Get it out of the freezer some evening and it will taste good to you again.

It's a great idea and definitely worth it to take advantage of how cheap it usually is around this time of year. For example, they had turkeys for 79 cents per pound. Buying an extra, smaller one and freezing it would be a good idea. I just don't enjoy turkey enough and so it is rare that I will do it. I like the idea of freezing the cooked turkey and think that could be very useful. Something for me to keep in mind. And just like chicken, a ton of things you can do with it for sure.

@MarieCoyle I will generally take advantage of hams on sale. But rarely the turkey. I just don't like it all that much. Even if it is cheap.

@porwest If the meat is cooked ahead, you can portion it out in ziplocks/packaging of whatever you use, and it takes no time at all to defrost it and throw together a meal--a stir fry, a casserole, the possibilities are endless. I got in the habit of doing this when my kids were growing up and I worked, too, of course. I also cooked ground beef and froze it, as well as some sausage sometimes. That was used for all sorts of things--a head start on a pot of chili or other soup, pizza toppings, again--casseroles, spaghetti sauce, and so forth. I still do that, it just helps a lot to cook a bunch of it at once and then that step is eliminated when you need to make the meal. Around here, usually once Christmas is over turkeys are at rock bottom prices. I generally take full advantage of that.

I will gladly take anyone’s Thanksgiving leftovers, and co-workers and friends often load me up with food they’re tired of eating. That’s just less cooking I have to do. Lol

@porwest I’m like you, I will never turn down free food. Even if I’m stuffed, I’ll still take any free food I’m offered. It can always be eaten as tomorrow’s lunch!

I would never turn them down. As much as I might get tired of eating it, I won't turn down free food. lol

@moffittjc It's like today. My niece is hosting a birthday party for her son who turned 4 yesterday. It will be at Chuck E. Cheese, which is an abomination. But I will still mow down every last bit of free crappy pizza I can.

Wow - we never have that much leftovers. In most years it's been maybe a couple of full meals for the 4 of us - and then the rest goes into the carcass soup. Ah, but I guess you have another main meat with the ham. I never get sick of a turkey meal - I could eat like that everyday (but I sure wouldn't want to cook like that everyday .

@porwest I would love endless leftovers like that (maybe ) but it never happens.

@much2say But you do get tired of eating the same stuff after a while. That's the biggest drawback.

Leftovers are almost seemingly endless around here from Thanksgiving to Christmas. lol. It's a wonder I am not 900 pounds by New Year's.

Extra food means no cooking food days for next 2 days.

My mom ate leftover turkey yesterday (or perhaps it was today) and then had a stomachache. I trashed whatever was left over yesterday. Not gonna risk it lol.

@porwest if we’re not desperate for food I think we should trash it if it seems bad. Or as I call it sanitation donation.

I guess she could have gotten some bad turkey. Definitely possible. As much as I hate to throw food away, I probably would have done the same thing.

@lovebuglena Something like that. I mean, if it is still good, I'd never want to throw it away. But I won't eat it if it is going to make me sick.

There's enough white meat for one more sandwich. I will have that tonight. Hubs made extra drums and thighs; and I think he still has some left. We also have mashed potatoes, cornbread and a little bit of stuffing left. Have a great day.

I don't even want to think about turkey. lol. It's probably why I never take advantage of the rock bottom prices after the holidays. I just don't care for it all that much and the bird's just too damn big. lol

@porwest We gobble down that big gobbler. We usually get an 11-14# turkey. And we love it! I order extra legs and thighs for my husband.

@LindaOHio IF I buy a "secondary" one, that's about the size I will get. For the family dinner ones those puppies are like 22-24 pounds. lol

You can freeze the left overs and have them may be next week or even later

We ate leftovers for about two days and then I froze what was left. Weeks from now it will be good heat and eat dinner.

Sometimes we will freeze some too. This year we didn't do that.

We don't have any leftovers because we didn't cook. Mike's Mom normally offers to send some home with us but didn't this time which we are fine with. I do make turkey for us at home and normally it makes at least 3-4 different meals for us, the original dinner, then a soup and salad. Once in awhile a sandwich too.. Don't make too many sides when we cook, usually 1-2 veggies and stuffing, that is it.

Our family always makes a crap ton, so there was more than enough. We all got a huge roasting pan full of stuff. Nuts. lol I mean, just between the meat we had a 22 pound turkey and a 12 pound ham.
