2/6/24 - Update on Hubby

They had to sedate hubby again yesterday. They now have someone sitting with him all day every day because he tries to get up and walk. He is too dizzy and unsteady on his feet to get up alone. He was pretty lucid when I spoke with him last night. During the day he was hard to understand. I got a call from someone that prepares the patient for discharge. She asked the usual questions about what type of home you live in, how many steps into the house, etc. She said that if he's not really strong on his feet, he will have to go to rehab. I don't want that to happen...I want him home. She mentioned home rehab; but since he never lined up a new primary care physician when his retired, she may not be able to make that happen. I told him about 100 times to find a new one. She's going to see if his heart doctor can initiate the order. I still would like him to get an MRI to rule out dementia. He's had a couple of instances in the past few months that were really scary; and I want to know that he doesn't have it. Thank you again for all your prayers and thoughts. You don't know how much I appreciate them. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Real quick and important question: do you have medical/legal power of attorney for him? Maybe the cardiologist’s office could also request an MRI for dementia/Alzheimer’s.

I know you want him home but if he needs rehab then he should go. . At least it's a step in the right direction.

I hope when it's time for him to be discharged that he can come home and do rehab there. It has to be very difficult for you Linda having him in the hospital and relying on someone to call and give you an update. At least your hubby was more lucid when you spoke to him so that sounds like a little bit of good news.

He was lucid this morning and now, at 1 pm, they have him in restraints.

@LindaOHio I'm sorry that is happening. He may need to be there a bit longer and then possibly go to the rehab for a bit. The need for restraints is concerning. In a hospital setting, they are set up for that if it's needed, but in a home setting, we are not. If the home care can get lined up for full time, he may be able to be home sooner rather than later...the hardest part is finding enough reliable people for shifts. Hopefully, it can all come together for him to be cared for properly and someone to help you as well. I know this is a hard time for you both. Keep the faith, don't lose hope, Linda.

They listened to me and gave him an MRI last night. I don't have the results yet. I hope the heart doctor can approve home rehab as well.

@LindaOHio I wonder why he is so adamant about wanting to get up and walk around? I am sure they are telling him he can't.

I am sorry that he had such a difficult day yesterday. Don't they use bed alarms on patients who tend to try to crawl out of bed? I alerted my sister-in-law, who was an RN on the floor where my Dad was admitted years ago, and advised her of my concern, and she was getting ready to go into work and said that she would put a bed alarm on him.

@Juliaacv Here you have to get a doctor to state that it is medically necessary, but you would need that for restraints as well. I wonder if they do not do that because they cannot get staff to him quick enough once he starts.

@LindaOHio You know it was quite a long time ago that my Dad went through this, so they may not be a device that is still used.

Of course, you want him home. And, in good time that's just where he'll be. Men are terrible about taking care of medical things. I could tell you some tales. Hope things improve and they order that MRI soon.

I think that for the moment your husband is too agitated and stressed to have an MRI. He must lie still, stay relaxed inside the MRI unit even little movements distort the image. The test takes 20 to 90 minutes. May be it's better to postpone this test.

@LindaOHio Do your know that recent studies suggest that exposure to general anaesthesia could cause neurodegeneration consistent with Alzheimer's disease? I wonder if my husband had too many and we are using this system too much in our modern days.
