Dogs on leads and parrots on leads seen at the sports centre

We have a sports centre and large oval just over the road from our lifestyle village. On Friday evening, a dozen or so food vans were there. We took our chairs and some wine to sit and enjoy the atmosphere while enjoying a meal we hadn’t cooked ourselves. A lot of people had their dogs on leads but one young couple who sat near us had two sun conure parrots with them. The parrots had a harness of sorts around their bodies and a long leather lead. They were very tame and not a bit intimidated by all the noise and activity. They picked away at the lawn or sat on fingers or shoulders as dictated by the handlers. Sun conures (Aratinga solstitialis) are medium-sized South American parrots. They are very colourful. These were mostly golden-yellow with orange underparts and green and blue wings and tail. One had a black head. The birds are now listed as endangered. I think maybe these were young as the tails weren’t nearly as long as those in the photo. I didn’t have my camera so the photo is from Wikimedia, courtesy of Wayne Deeker.

They are beautiful birds. Sad to know that these birds are endangered. We had a pet parrot. He stayed with mom for almost 45 years and could imitate human speech. It was killed by a street cat who just entered our door left open by mistake.

That would have been traumatic for your mother, not to mention the poor bird. Do you know what sort of parrot it was?

Well, aren't they so cuute... Maybe the ones you saw had their tail feathers trimmed so they wouldn't fly away. Happy Easter.

Usually it's the wings that get clipped but you could be right. Thanks for the Easter wishes. I hope yours was enjoyable too.

@JudyEv I think. cats like to go like to for walks, but I wouldn't start that with mine. He would want to go outside all the time. Remember DianneN's cat Doodles wanting to out 5 or 6x a day? I don't want that to be me

I guess they get used to it. I'm always surprised to see cats on leads but they don't seem to mind too much either.

I've got nothing against birds as pets but I've got nothing for them, either. I'm a cat person. I have a cat which I keep indoors because there's traffic in the street infront of our house. The cat likes sitting on the balcony and watching the street below.

I wouldn't want a bird as a pet either. We had a cat for many years but don't have one at the moment.

My step-daughter used to take her budgie (I think she was a budgie) to the park on a lead sometimes. The bird's name was Comfort. Sadly, she passed away last year. She was quite old for a bird, though (maybe 17 years. I know my step-daughter had her since she was young as she'd brought the bird home to nurse and Comfort recovered much better than expected). Apart from Comfort, the only other non-dogs I've seen on leads have been cats. I must say that all of the pets that weren't dogs were very well behaved and had lovely humans.

@JudyEv she does miss her. She has/had a lot of other pets but Comfort was extra special.

Budgies are very common here too as pets but I've never seen one on a lead. I'm sure your step-daughter misses her budgie.

It's always sad to hear that an animal is endangered. Hopefully, numbers might recover.

They are beautiful birds, I wonder if they know life without being on a lead.

Perhaps they have a cage at home although in this area I can't imagine that it would be a very big one.

They were very much at home that evening and were pecking away at the grass. It's hardly a natural life though.

@judyev I'm not sure that I like that - birds were meant to fly. Not too fond of caging pets either. I have seen a few cats on leads here and my wife went through a pahse of that till she saw sense.

@JudyEv I wouldn’t like budgie business in my cup of tea either. My granny had budgies (Joey and Peter) who had the run of the house every evening and returned to their cages of their own accord at ten o’clock.

I hear what you're saying and I agree. I know a couple with a pair of budgies and they are free within the house all day every day. Apparently they do their business in a couple of favourite spots. Not my cup of tea though.

They are beautiful birds, but on leads? I even think it seems odd to see cats on a leash and that’s becoming more common.

I thought that about cats too but most don't seem to mind. I guess animals and humans can get used to lots of things.

I think they are messy too. I wouldn't really want them in a cage all the time but I couldn't stand the mess in a house.
