Going back 70 years, before I was born (and before many of you were born), we reach another point in the countdown where the reverberations from 1954 are still being felt today. Here’s another song that’s now 70 years old…and still significant. (We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley & His Comets Bill Haley was one of the unsung heroes of early rock and roll. Earlier this month I used Big Joe Turner’s original recording of “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” and listening to the difference in that and Haley’s rendition tells you of the impact that “rockabilly” or mixing country with R&B was having. This was Haley’s follow-up to his cover of “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” It was an instant hit. It became legendary over time, thanks to its use in American Graffiti, the theme to Happy Days, and even a reference in Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock” (“while the other kids were rockin’ ‘round the clock we were hoppin’ and boppin’ to the crocodile rock”). As I’ve also mentioned before, Haley never thought he got the credit he deserved, which made him bitter and reliant on alcohol. He died at 55, way too young and long before he saw his contributions to rock and roll acknowledged. This is one of the starting points for the music we know and love as rock and roll. (We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock Written by Max Freedman and Jimmy DeKnight Recorded by Bill Haley and His Comets Released as a single, 1954 If the band slows down we’ll yell for more:

I know you've heard this, but it just popped into my head. I might have enjoyed being a teenager in the 1950s or 1960s.

@TheHorse — you need to change that (not performing any of his songs).

@FourWalls Jesse was only about ten years older than me. I am yet to perform one of his songs. But I do teach some of the early ones to my students.

@FourWalls Who? Wait. Didn't one of them die in a plane crash with Richie Valens?

If there is an American or Canadian not aware of this one, I’d be shocked.

Oh, there are plenty who don’t know it. But I don’t talk to those people…I don’t need that negativity in my life.

This one I grew up with but knowing it as the theme to "Happy Days" . . . iconic 50s song to me!

I kind of preferred this to the Pratt & McLain theme song, but that’s because this gave it more of a 50s authenticity.

@FourWalls I had to look them up . . . I don't know them or that they did their version of Happy Days. I agree with you . . . I like the Bill Haley & His Comets version!

Those were the days…we’d go out to concerts, come home at 3 AM, then get up three hours later and go to work with the club stamp or wristband still on!

@FourWalls yep I remember saying over in my friend's apartment in Manhattan and walking to work with the gleam of the sun hitting me from all the buildings, Went out at lunch for a quick cocktail to get through the afternoon and after work it was party time again especially if it was a Friday. Loved that song It's Friday I'm in love and I was in love with everything

@FourWalls Very early rock does not resonate with me that much. The bubblegum of the '60s was a backdrop to my childhood. Late '60s and early '70s rock with probably always be my favorite.

I'm a bit fascinated by the curl on his forehead! Maybe that was in fashion at the time.

It was common in a lot of his photos, even later in his life.

This was a very popular song here. We even have a Chinese version sung by a popular singer here.
