Mopping Floors

United States

Happy Friday Everyone! a cloudy start to this day with rain maybe? We had some nice spring days and then back to chilly weather. The last few days were cold enough to put the heat back on. Today I have on a lightweight sweater and I'm comfortable. Crazy weather. I'm having company on Sunday so today I'm going to mop the kitchen floor and save the vacuuming/dusting for tomorrow. I recently got a new electric steam mop that is self-propelled so it just glides over the floor and I don't have to more than just point it in the right direction. Mopping is so much easier these days. The older I get, the less strength I have for some of the things that used to be a breeze to do. I remember my mom scrubbing our kitchen floor on her hands and knees and then after it being washed, she would wax it. I haven't scrubbed a floor on my hands and knees in ages. Have you ever scrubbed your floors on your hands and knees? What do you use to clean your floors these days?

@Tampa_girl7 I can't get up off the floor anymore either. I remember the good old days when I could get down on the floor and bounce right back up.

Only time I have scrubbed on hands and knees is after house flooded in Louisiana. We have wooden floors in this house so I just sweep up with broom or dust mop/Swifter.

@Marilynda1225 Yes, it was not fun. A total mess. And lots of things got thrown out to the trash. The whole street was piled up with furniture and other things from home all up and down the street. Very sad.

@kareng I hope you never have to experience that ever again.

Your house in Louisiana must have been a mess after it flooded. I have hardwood floors too and my Swiffer works wonders.

I use a Swiffer wet pad, and get down on the floor to clean the floor. Using the full mop part just doesn’t seem to get it as clean.

I haven't gotten down on my hands and knees in years and I'm happy that we have more modern conveniences these days

I have helped Mum scrub her floors. I'd have trouble getting up again if I did it now.

I wouldn't be able to get up either if I had to scrub on my hands and knees these days. Our moms had life a lot harder than we do nowadays with our modern conveniences.

Your electric steam mop sounds cool. I use a string mop which is attached to a pole.

I recently got my new steam mop. I had a string mop for the longest time but it got to a point where I didn't have as much strength in my hands to do all that physical mopping. Getting old and I find I have more limitations

Oh Hell no, but my mom used to bless her heart. I do have some dirt in the crevices though that I will sometimes sit on the floor to clean them

I would never be able to scrub anything on my hands and knees anymore. I'm really glad that we have so many options these days for cleaning floors.

Oh wow, I remember seeing mom do that but I've never done that. Now that I have only the particle board I don't dare use water to clean so I vacuum.

Twice a year I used to get on my hands and knees and scrub and polish our hardwood floor in our dining room. I loved that floor, it was just beautiful and I thought that it always looked so new and nice as a result of spending half a day cleaning and polishing it. I have never done that since moving from that home, and I do not regret it. I just use a mop and bucket now, but am thinking of getting an electric mop that dries the floor after you pass it over the spot you mopped. Our daughter-in-law has one and my hubs uses it often when he is watching the girls, he loves it.

I bet those floors in your other home sparkled after you scrubbing and polishing them. I always had carpet in my other homes so just zipping a vacuum over them was enough. The only scrubbing I did back in the day was the bathroom floors. Now I have a self propelled steam mop which works on all surfaces. It's great for the tile in the bathroom and also for the hardwood floors as it doesn't get the floor soaking wet. Hope you can get the mop like your DIL has to make your life a little easier.

I just use a Swiffer wet jet to clean my tile floors. I also remember my mom on her hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor, followed by a waxing. Do people even wax their kitchen floors anymore these days?

I remember my mom waxing our kitchen floor but it was linoleum. I don't know if people wax kitchen floors anymore. I have hardwood in my kitchen so I just steam mop when necessary. Otherwise it's the good old Swiffer for the dust.

@moffittjc linoleum is a blast from the past. I had forgotten all about it until I started talking about my mom washing and waxing our kitchen floor.

@Marilynda1225 You may be right about waxing linoleum. That’s what we used to have in our house as well.

Not since I lived at home when I was a kid. I hated scrubbing floors on my hands and knees. I couldn't do it today if I wanted to. I'm glad washing floors is easier than when you were younger. I'm glad too. I have a Swiffer mop. It's a wonder. Not self-propelled, but that's okay. Washing floors here is a breeze. Have fun tomorrow.

I have a Swiffer mop too for upstairs. It's a godsend so thanks to whomever invented it. I can't even imagine having to clean on my hands and knees. My knees hurt just thinking about it

@Marilynda1225 So do mine. When I got my new knees, the doctor told me no kneeling. The couple of times I found myself on my knees was very painful.

We have a spin mop that separates clean from dirty water. I actually find the floors cleaner doing it the old-fashioned way, but my knees aren't up to it anymore.

I think I've seen those spin mops and they look like they would do a good job. I don't think many of us could scrub a floor on our knees anymore

That's awesome you got two mops to review and keep. Swiffer has some good products. I have one on each floor to dust my hardwood floors.

I still scrub my kitchen floor on my hands and knee, not the other floors, that are not hard to mop. It is incredible how greasy the kitchen floor can always get.

@Marilynda1225 I do not fry a lot, but cooking spread the little grease in the air and then on the floor. I only scrub the kitchen floor "the old way", for the others a good modern mop is fine.

Wow I'm amazed that you can still scrub your kitchen floor on your hands and knees. I do agree that the kitchen can get greasy and harder to clean with just a mop. I don't fry much anymore so my floor gets dirty from the dog and of course everything I spill

I have a swiffer mop that uses wet and dry pads. I did have a wet jet, but the batteries eroded in it. My mother has a spin mop. I would love to get a steam mop.

My steam mop is great and since I have hardwood floors it doesn't get the floor too wet. I'm still thinking of getting a housekeeper but every time I decide to, I change my mind. One of these days
