Seen at the petting farm

At the opening of the shopping centre, the children were treated to face-painting, balloon animals and a petting zoo. Vince had instructions to take photos of the creatures in the petting zoo so I’m able to show you a collage of some of them. He said the goose was really quiet with children petting it and trying to pick it up. They even had a calf there but it isn’t in any of the photos. The duck on the right in the photo on the lower left must be a hybrid as I don’t think ducks with that colouring usually have the topknot on the head. There is a crested duck but it’s usually white. In the same photo, don’t miss the beautifully patterned plumage of the other duck. I’m sorry now that I didn’t go to see them all.

There’s a kangaroo petting area not too far from me. That probably wouldn’t interest anyone in Australia. I don’t think I’d try to pick up any animal in a petting zoo. Except the snakes, of course.

Tourists go ape over seeing a roo, especially in the wild. Mind you, I'm not much better myself.

@JudyEv — I understand. There are traffic jams all over the Great Smoky Mountains national park when someone sees a black bear…it’s like the ONLY thing you can see there.

Looks like a great time for the Kids as well as their parents alike. I wonder what emotions would these animals be having? May be some excitement?

From the photos they all looked very laid back although Vince said one lamb badly wanted to be friends with the rabbits.

Makes me think of the few petting zoos I'd been at. A chicken kept following me in one.

It's strange sometimes how a creature will decide you're 'it'. I wonder why that is.

@JudyEv You may have something that appeals to them. Or, they can see the type of person you really are. Humans can often mask how they feel from each other, but animals can see right through you.

I really had to take a good look at that duck to be sure what I was seeing - very unusual topknot! Domestic geese are much nicer than wild geese, that's for sure.

The crested duck has this topknot but I've never seen on of this colouring with it. I'll attach a photo of a pure crested duck.

I didn't see the topknot. I was surprised to see paintings in the ground near the animals. It's too bad they couldn't have had a place for the children to keep those for safe keeping. I wonder if the house was tame then? My brother had a duck for a pet when he was young but I don't know that it allowed any petting.

Fun time! The last petting zoo I attended held a surprise for me. The goat I was petting had it’s mouth chomping on my hair. I never even felt it, but had wet hair with goat’s breath on it.

@judyev Geese aren’t normally that cooperative! We saw some really lovely Ouessant sheep in a petting farm in Donegal a few weeks ago. And black faced Valois. Was there a few years ago too and might have mentioned them.

I was a bit surprised about the goose too! The Valois sheep are beautiful. We saw some unusual breeds in a zoo in Austria. And a farm in Parsons Green, Tipperary, had Jacob's sheep with three or more horns.
