Top ten time! While I sit in a different Chuy’s (had to come over and see my brother) I’ll get you started on my ten favorite songs from seventy years ago. No, I wasn’t around then; however, records were, and I discovered a boatload of great songs. Here’s one of them. #10: Sh-Boom (Life Could Be a Dream) - The Chords Now, I grew up with the Crew-Cuts’ version of this song, which was…well, kinda boring after hearing the original. The Chords were an all-black doo-wop group. As it was still the 50s (complete with segregation), you’d frequently get Caucasian acts covering the R&B songs. That’s basically a description of Pat Boone’s career: turning R&B songs into white-bread boredom. I still love the Crew-Cuts (a Canadian band) and many of their other hits, including “Angels in the Sky” and “Earth Angel,” but as this was the only hit The Chords ever had, AND they wrote the song, I thought I’d feature their original version. Life could be a dream? Life is a dream with wonderful music like this! Sh-Boom (Life Could Be a Dream) Written by James Keyes, Claude Feaster, Carl Feaster, Floyd F. McRae, and William Edwards Recorded by The Chords Released as a single, 1954 (Also recorded by the Crew-Cuts, 1954) Every time I look at you:

I grew up knowing this song . . . but I couldn't tell you how I know. Was it from Happy Days . . . or maybe Sha Na Na . . . very doo-wop cute anyway!

Yeah, life could be a dream. It could also be a nightmare. But I've always liked this song, no matter who sang it.

Alice Cooper had the “welcome to my nightmare,” so I’ll stick with it being a dream. This is such a cool song.

I remember the song. Both versions are really good. After listening to both of them, I think it was the Crew Cuts version I remember. You can't top the Penguins #1 version of "Earth Angel." Sorry Crew Cuts, you were "Flat Topped" in my opinion on that one!

You’re absolutely correct, the Crew Cuts’ “Earth Angel” pales in comparison. However, their version was the first one that I heard.

I like doo-wop, and this is a great song! I believe it was featured in the movie Clue. ...oh, I just looked it up to be sure, and that was the Crew Cuts version. Eh.

I grew up on the Crew-Cuts’ version, but this one has more soul. Probably because these guys wrote it.

I hope you’ll know all the pop and rock 50s songs…and they’ll give you comfort from the country ones.

I do, too. At my age, though, the definition of “oldies” is different than the kids who think Nirvana is “oldies.”
