My dad and his BFF used to go RC car racing all the time during the season. They loved competing against each other. My sister said something during her speech at his memorial that was funny but also very true. They loved to beat each other. It didn't matter if they came in 49th and 50th in a race with 50 cars. The man who was 49 had bragging rights until the next race. A coworker of mine also does the racing. He knew my dad from him driving the band to football games, competitions, field trips, etc. Anyway my friend texted me a picture this morning showing information about this year's opening day at one of the tracks. They are honoring my dad and calling it the Doug Olson Memorial. That is very nice of them to do and again just shows how many people in that hobby group loved my dad. My sister said she is going with her kids. Presumably my mother and my second parents will be there as well. I haven't decided if I'm going just yet. It is like an hour away and I have zero interest in watching grown men race toy cars. Still it is nice to know that they will be remembering my dad even if I don't go.

Oh, I wouldn't be able to stay away. My dad was a huge car racing fan. He worked at the Indy 500 for years, he was an engine specialist for various drivers off and on. He absolutely loved racing. I would have been over the moon for him to be honored in such a way, but that's just me. I honor him in my memories...

this is radio-controlled like toy car racing. It isn't actual people racing cars.

@NJChicaa Yes, I thought that as the picture depicts holding a remote car. Would not have bothered my Dad, he didn't care what kind or size or type the cars were, just so it was a car! He was always buying toy cars for my littles and they played with them together.

That's a nice thing for them to do even if you don't go.

That's a very nice thing for them to do. It would be nice if you could go; but I understand why you're not interested. Have a good day.

It seems to me everything thease days becomes a sport. However, I am glad your dad is being honored.

It’s very nice of them to pay tribute to him that way. Bill Hammond was a dear friend and a mentor, so winning the Putt Putt tournament named in his memory meant the world to me. I can also understand if you’re not interested in the sport.
