Hi from Birmingham, Alabama! I’m late from my normal posting time, but I am on central time. Pokey LaFarge sang of the joys of central time, and I believe him. But this is about 1954, and another great song that’s now 70 years old. Here’s today’s selection. #6: Hearts of Stone - Fontane Sisters I first heard this song by Red Foley, the country singer. The John Fogerty did it in his post-CCR recording under the name the Blue Ridge Rangers. But the song goes back to a west coast doo-wop group called the Jewels. Two members of that group wrote the song. With each cover it got a little faster, until we arrived at this bouncy version by the Fontane Sisters, the pride of New Milford, New Jersey. This definitely puts a “rock” feel in it (not to the extent that Fogerty’s 1973 version did, but still, consider the time). This was the Fontane Sisters’ biggest hit, and it remains a classic of the year that rock and roll began to stir. Hearts of Stone Written by Eddie Ray and Rudy Jackson Recorded by the Fontane Sisters Released as a single, 1954 Although you love them:

I wasn’t born, either. But thankfully the art is there for all time.

I’m glad you’re enjoying some of our popular music from the 1950s. Some of these are “country music,” the “whiny” moaning blues of southern US whites, and they aren’t as enjoyable to many people.

Don't know anything about this unless it is the same as the Cher song Heart of Stone

Common name for a song. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes had a similarly-titled song.

Some of the backings to these songs were so great.

I know. And, in hindsight, you can definitely hear rock and roll coming along.
