Do you eat too fast? Eat and run? Bolt your food down?

I thought about this several times lately. For years, I know I ate my meals way, way too quickly. I was in a terrible hurry all the time, I guess. Chasing kids, working, cooking, keeping house--the same things many of us do. During the pandemic, after taking stock of my health, I realized I truly did need to lose weight. I had to teach myself some things I knew about food and eating, but didn't practice--to count my calories, to make better choices, and to take my time and slow down, and not hurry to eat and get finished so fast. That was one hard lesson, the learning to slow down the eating, and chew my food thoroughly. My oldest girl and her husband moved nearby and sometimes have us over to eat. He is the fastest eater I have ever seen. He is trying to work on that, but oh, boy...he is a doctor. For years, he had to bolt his food and run to the next patient, and he is truly struggling with this habit. He isn't overweight and makes wonderful food choices, but oh, does he ever eat fast! Eating too fast can lead to elevated blood pressure, early cardiac problems, higher blood sugars, and taking in too many calories. Nothing good seems to come from bolting down our food. Do you bolt your food down?

I've always been a slow eater. Our daughter is a fast eater, well, she's fast at everything, but it's a family joke that when we're all eating together, if you turn your head, Tammy will have your plate in the dishwasher. I admire your determination to slow down, it will sure be healthier for you.

I have honestly been eating a lot slower for nearly 2 years now, and yes, it's made a huge difference. Tammy sounds like my son in law. Don't blink, or your plate will be gone as soon as you do! No, he isn't that bad but he is trying hard now to slow down and eat slower.

I am a faster eater than my husband, but I take my time. Finally I think that he is a very slow eater, when we have guests I finish at the same time of our guests, he is the last one to finish.

@MarieCoyle He is so slow. I try to slow down as much as I can, but I always finish my food before he does.

There are times when I eat too quickly. I find myself usually doing this at work mostly. When I'm the only one at the front desk and there's a lot to do.

@MarieCoyle It's definitely a challenge. Thankfully it's not everyday, but there are days when I don't have much of a choice.

Not anymore. When I was younger, and especially in the Navy, it was a different story. They’d tell us three times a day, before our meals, in boot camp, “You have 20 minutes, and 20 minutes only, in which to eat your meal.”

@MarieCoyle — we did that as a unit before we left for the chow hall, so it was 20 minutes devoted to food and nothing else. The clock started when the last person in the unit sat down, so they were the truly unlucky ones: half of us were inside, getting food and enjoying air conditioning, while the other half were standing outside in Florida July heat, waiting to get inside the chow hall. Ah, sweet boot camp memories.

Did that include things like washing your hands, going to the rest room, etc. as well? Twenty minutes go by very quickly.

My husband gobbles up his food, too, but he tells me he still enjoys it and savors the flavors. I don’t see how that’s possible.

@MarieCoyle I do, but the only good thing is that he gets up and washes the pots and pans, loads the dishes, cleans the mess on the stove and counters, and by then, I am finished eating. He even does my dishes.

Don't you kind of hate it when you spend a long time trying to make a good, special dinner and it gets gobbled up in no time at all? I do! I want them to learn to slow down and savor the flavor...maybe someday.

I seem to do many things in a hurry eating included. After reading all the health risks associated with eating fast, I'll need to slow down. Good advice. I'll also need to work on snacking when I'm not really hungry. I bet another problem some have too.

I used to rush my meals, mainly because my job only gave me half an hour for lunch and in the evening I had ‘other plans’ after my dinner and the eating bit was slowing me down. Now I take time to chew and to savour my meals. Plus I cook a lot more now and want to enjoy it. The secret to losing weight is to chew as much food as you want, but don’t swallow it.

I am online enough the way it is, I don't want to be on the computer while I am eating. I always consider that time family time, if anyone is here, which of course my son has been. So we use that as a chat time, sometimes we watch local news and weather as well during that time.

I don't but I found out when I took our housekeeper out to eat a couple of times that she bolts her food down and can eat a large portion in a very short amount of time. She had to sit and wait for me to finish. Have a good weekend.

I’m the slowest in my family, but I’m not slow, or really fast. My dad is super fast, but that stems from having to do all the chores after supper, but before bedtime. Plus, he was trying to get enough food from his numerous siblings. It’s just natural for him.

I have heard that from many people who grew up with a lot of siblings, that they ate quickly because when it was all gone, it was gone, and they wanted to get enough to eat. Hurts the heart, for sure.

Yes! And since the tummy and the mind aren't in perfect sync about when our ''full'' thing kicks in, it's best to eat slowly. I never have seconds anymore, I don't need them.

I ate fast when I was a teenager because my siblings and I would sometimes compete over a limited amount of food. I ate less and less when I reached college because I was working and studying at the same time and was too busy to sit and enjoy a slow meal. I was thin as a stick back then. I learned to eat mindfully and slowly in my late 20s. It's good to enjoy a meal with people you like. Now I'm in my late 40s and I still eat slowly but alone most of the time now, so i tend to get extra helpings without realizing that I've eaten more than I should. I'm trying to see how I could modify my diet and perhaps engage in more physical activities so I could burn the carbs. I do exercise almost every day but I know I have to eat less too.

It's too bad that eating is so enjoyable, and that we can't just erase the calories, isn't it? Maybe someday, who knows...nothing anyone invented now would surprise me, I don't think. So many people from bigger families competed for food. I had a friend who was one of 12 children, her family was like that--the kids descended on the food like a pack of wolves, because there was never enough.
