4/28/24 - Update on My Husband

My husband is constantly waiting for the nurses and/or aides to respond to his call light or come back when they say they will. When I attend the meeting on Wednesday, I must bring up the slow response to the call lights (sometimes as long as 3 hours) and the terrible food. My husband kept saying, "You're coming tomorrow?" Poor guy. He has to wait until Wednesday. Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

That must feel so heart-breaking to hear him ask you that. It tells me that there is alot that he isn't telling you. I hope that you are drafting up your notes for the meeting.

@LindaOHio I know, I can feel your pain when I read your posts. I have to say that I really admire your strength that you have shown for so many months now. That cannot be easy.

@Juliaacv Actually I'm a real wimp. I'm surprised I'm able to keep going alone. I've had to do adult things and make adult decisions. Can't say that I've enjoyed most of it. lololol

The call light situation is ridiculous. I mean, it feels criminal.

Suppose it was something critical that had to be addressed immediately?

You're welcome to bring it up, but the harsh reality that's common anywhere you go. Doctors and nurses don't want patients doing anything for themselves, unless supervised. Often times, there's more patiens than there are staff. One nurse could be assigned to as much as five or six people. Complaining isn't going to change it. George didn't have to wait near as long, only because I could do a lot of things for him. It takes a lot of patience. If you're unhappy with the care, then you may need to do the research about getting him relocated. However, be sure you have a back up plan. If either of you complain too much, seeing as this is rehab, they could kick you out for non-conpliance. Which means, at the end of the day, your husband suffers because he'll be in the lurch without therapy.

@LindaOHio Here in the U.s. We have the right to refuse treatment. You can't hold someone against their will. I only tell you this, because it almost happened to George when he was in rehab. I did not mean to make you nervous, only understand how things work.

He has a referral in for another facility; but they have no beds available. I didn't know that they could kick him out for complaining. That makes me nervous.

I feel so sorry for your husband he must feel lonely there alone. Three hours waiting is ridiculous, what if it were an emergency?

Three hours!! I'm sure they must be busy but that is just ridiculous. He might as well just press the light in the morning in case he needs anything later!

Yes, you should definitely bring up the issue of responding slowly to call lights. This is important.

I wonder how overworked the nurses/hospital staff are? I think 3 hours is a long time to wait when a call button is pushed, but I also understand that many of the staff are probably overworked and underpaid. But they should still be able to respond within MINUTES of the button being pushed, not hours.

@LindaOHio That is true. I can only imagine the lawsuits that would ensue if a patient was having a true emergency and the staff failed to respond to the call button.

Did they respond to your "inquiry" about the long response times? Three hours can't be right. How many hundreds of patients do they have there?

I will tell them on Wednesday. There is a nurse's station for each section of patients. I don't know how many for each station.

I'm truly sorry to hear about the challenges you and your husband are facing. It must be incredibly frustrating to have to wait for assistance for such extended periods, especially when it comes to something as essential as responding to call lights. It's absolutely understandable that you feel compelled to address these concerns during the upcoming meeting. Your husband's anticipation and hope for tomorrow only reflect the strength of his spirit despite the difficulties he's enduring. Please know that you both remain in my thoughts, and I'm sending you both my sincerest support and heartfelt prayers during this trying time.

Most of the aides and staff in rehabs seem to lollygag about instead of tending to the patients.
