5/2/24 - Update on My Husband

Got to the rehab facility about 10 minutes early; and the Social Worker came out of her office and made it clear that we were early and not everyone had come yet. She then gushed about how happy she was to meet me so now she knows who she is talking to on the phone. What a hypocrite. She made an offer to have my husband in on the meeting and went to get him. My husband said she was quite short with him and he was ready for a retort but held back. I was quite shocked when I saw my husband. His cheeks are now sunken and he looks 10 years older. He's lost over 50 pounds now. Finally the guy from physical therapy came in and we could start the meeting. She went over what our plans were when hubby gets out of rehab. She gave me some good news that the doctor who works out of the facility will automatically put in a request for home physical therapy when my husband is ready for release. I won't have to do anything. The PT guy said hubby is doing very well. I asked about steps. They are not quite ready for that. She agreed about the food not being palatable and too salty. Apparently it's all shipped in and reheated. It's not made there. She also made a note about 3 hours for a response to the call light. The meeting was quite civil. When the meeting was over, she patted me on the shoulder and said how glad she was to meet me. Gag. We had a nice visit with my husband; and his cousin went out and got him some burgers and fries which he enjoyed immensely. It had been 2-1/2 weeks since I had seen him; so I was really glad to be there. Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

That's a terrible way to do the food. Take him some every time someone goes to visit.

Been there. Seen that. What the "flaky African lady" served to her infants and toddlers was horrific.

Yes. He really enjoys real food. What he gets he normally can't identify.

I would have said how can you say he is doing well when his physical appearance has declined so much? I think I would start ordering him take out or something from Door Dash.. At least weekly..It may not be the healthiest but at least he would gain some weight

@LindaOHio Does he have any timeframe for coming home? He really doesn:t seem to benefitting from being there. I think you should probably try topush going up a couple of steps so he can get out of that place!

@snowy22315 They said he walked about 35 feet with the walker which was good; but they said he wasn't ready for stairs yet.

We also should ask about him getting some Boost or Ensure. They gave him that in the hospital.

Losing about 50 pounds, it's no wonder he's too weak to do any walking! The food issue is unacceptable, even young people shouldn't eat that stuff:(

He can gain the weight back so long as he wants to eat. But, at least you'll have home health support.

I'm so glad things went well, now it's just a matter of someone actually doing something By the way, doctors who run rehabs are, to me, not to be trusted, have you talked to his primary doctor?

Wow. Well, if you can’t eat the food, no wonder you lose weight. I can’t believe they serve food high in sodium to a bunch of people who, by age standards alone, would have medical issues complicated by high sodium intake. (Or maybe that’s part of the plan…) Did you go wash your hand and shoulder after the meeting? I’ll bet he loved a “real” lunch. Did you get to ask about a refund of your money? Praying for you!!

I just smiled and bit my tongue when she patted me on the shoulder. He loved his lunch. Said it was the first time he'd been full since he was in rehab. There was no one from the Business Office at the meeting. We may need that money in their hands because I got a call from the SW. They are kicking my husband out as of tomorrow. We will have to go on self-pay again unless we win the new appeal that I filed today. It never ends.

Yes, he's the doctor that we met in the first hospital that my husband was in for his surgery. He said he worked out of that rehab facility; and I had his card. This saves me one thing I don't have to do.

Since he enjoyed the food so much, maybe you can stop on the way there every time and bring him something to eat that he likes. I bet he would enjoy that. I am sure you are glad the meeting is over and to be updated on everything as well. I hope you can get a ride soon and go back before too many days pass, it does you and your husband good.

it takes strength to survive meetings with this kind of people, good job. also, i hate when people say that someone is early;that is a good quality but it means less time for her being lazy cause, she was disturbed.

What a very heart-breaking post to read. I cannot imagine how either of you felt, so close to having him all of the way ready to go home, but not quite there, and his weight loss meaning that he needs to rebuilt his body, but with the admission from the staff that the food isn't the greatest, how will that ever occur. I can only hope that he is there for a bit longer and that somehow he is able to force himself to eat. It is too bad that you couldn't stock his room with fattening things, maybe granola bars or something.

Glad you got to talk to the social worker. Also glad to know he has an appetite when the food is good, He badly needs to get some weight on him, Could it be possible to have them give him protein shakes? He should not loose any more weight, I hope things will progress and continuing to keep him in my prayers, Blessings to you both,

I'm glad you were able to have your "in person" meeting even though you probably wanted to gag with the gushing from the social worker. You would think that she would be more caring to the patients and families and not giving the impression that she was being bothered. I'm sorry to hear that your husband has lost so much weight but glad that he enjoyed his burger and fries. Sounds like things will be in place for his at home care when the time comes. I'm sure you'll fatten him up when he gets home.

You would think rehabs would provide better care than the hospital, but that's not always the case. Sadly, it's really a business and staying profitable is their first priority. If only you could convert your first floor to temporarily accommodate your husband so as not to use the stairs. He could come home and eat a proper meal. Ensure or boost is a good idea. Doesn't the rehab offer a refrigerator so you could bring some in for him. I hope your husband recovers soon so this ordeal can end for you and him.

Our house is on one level but there are 3 steps to get inside. I don't know of a refrigerator that he could use. I'm going to check with the dining people to see if he can get some Boost or Ensure. Thank you for your concern and have a good weekend.

@LindaOHio You might check on having a handicap ramp installed leading to your home so there would be no stairs required. And purchasing a wheelchair (which insurance may cover) to wheel him up the ramp. Not sure if this is feasible for you, just trying to help you figure out a solution. The longer he stays in rehab, I fear the more difficult it will be for him to come home. https://www.lifewaymobility.com/wheelchair-ramps/rental-wheelchair-ramps/
