One phone call saved us $800

The photo has nothing to do with the post. It’s an Australian ringneck parrot engaging his landing brakes. Some would have seen it before.
My husband is booked in for major surgery in a few weeks. The hospital rang to say our insurance company doesn’t cover a single room. We thought we were covered as we’ve been paying for the highest table but, sure enough, in the fine print – no single room.
Never one to be beaten, Vin rang the insurance company and, if we drop to the next level, they will cover a single room. Of course, other benefits are denied. These are pregnancy and IVF. As these won’t impact us at our age, we’ve dropped to the next level and saved ourselves $800 a year in the process. We won’t be covered for dialysis either but, Heaven forbid, if we need it we can jump back to the top level.

Health insurances are such pests. They seem to be winning always. I´m glad that you found a way.

@JudyEv In my country there is a big problem with health insurance companies. It seems that they charged more than they should and a few people pocketed the money and now they cant return it.

@JudyEv I could never cope in a ward with other sick people and especially with their visitors. My wife had to share a room after giving birth with a 15 year old who had also just produced. ALL the girl’s school friends had to visit en mass to see the baby and gave my 35 year old wife the strangest looks as if to say “imagine someone her age getting pregnant”.

It's odd that single rooms aren't available to the higher insurance plan. Out hospital has concerned all their rooms into individual ones so that's something we don't have to be concerned with.
I hope he's not needing major surgery, but if he is out either way I pray that surgery is a success.

@JudyEv That's for sure. I am paying mega bills for my husband's ambulance transports (he's had many) and percentage of his hospital and rehab stays since February 1!!!

That was a good phone call! Odd that they pay for a single on a lower level than you were.

They could certainly be tailored better to age/gender needs.

Odd that the highest level doesn't cover a single room.

Sometimes insurance companies have weird policy. I'm glad you save $800.
Hope all goes well with the surgery.
