In the Gospel of John 15:9 -17, Jesus imparts profound teachings on the essence of divine love and the expectations of His disciples. These verses not only encapsulate the deep, sacrificial nature of love as modeled by Jesus Himself but also outline the mutual responsibility and the bond among those who follow Him. "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. I call you friends. You did not choose me, but I chose you. Ask anything of the Father in my name. This is the most important and powerful commandment, the commandment of love. Jesus said, 'This is my command: Love each other. Because love is the center, there is nothing that is not covered by love. Love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God. Love is a holy power found in the heart that believes in God. Apostle Paul taught that when we have love for others, we are filled with goodwill towards all people. We are patient and kind. We are not arrogant or boastful, stingy or disrespectful. As a sign that we love, we must know how to forgive. Because of love, we do not engage in bloody or violent fights. Because of love, we learn to be humble. Because of love, we learn to endure and yield. Because of love, we strive to live in holiness. True to the line of a song, 'Love brings hope to our lives. In heart and mind, we are one, even if we are apart.' Let us all love since that is what our hearts are made for. We are challenged not to be afraid to love because God is love." As followers of Christ, the call to love as He loved is a guiding beacon in our lives, inspiring us to embody the virtues of compassion, humility, and unity. It challenges us to transcend our limitations and differences, urging us to live out the true essence of love in every interaction. By doing so, we not only fulfill the divine command but also cultivate a community reflective of God’s love in the world.
