First Watermelon of the Season

I stopped in our local grocery store in town yesterday to pick up a few things and found a new shipment of small watermelon had arrived. I had been wanting to get a watermelon, but a large one is just too big for the two of us.
This small round melon was the perfect size. However, when I went to cut it Friday evening I noticed that the label said it was imported from Mexico. Hello, we have awesome grown watermelons in Mississippi and neighboring Louisiana. Why import from another country?
It wasn't sweet-sweet, but it was okay. We enjoyed it, but I won't be buying another one from Mexico.
Do you like/love watermelon? Have you had one yet this year?

I just had one last week. I like watermelons but I go for the seedless ones and I prefer the yellow more than the red. I just find it sweeter - just a personal preference anyway. And on a side note, one of my cats loves watermelon so much. I make sure to give him just a few small bites as a treat. I only do this sometimes as watermelons - though not harmful to cats - are not really a part of a cat's diet.

It's disappointing when locally grown options are bypassed for imports, especially when it comes to produce like watermelon, where freshness and flavor can make a big difference. Supporting local farmers and enjoying fruits and vegetables in season often means better quality and taste.
As for watermelon, it's definitely a summer favorite for many! The juicy, refreshing sweetness is hard to resist, especially on a hot day.

@kareng Absolutely, Kareng! Nothing beats the taste of freshly picked, locally grown watermelon, especially on a warm summer day. Hopefully, your local flea market will soon be stocked with those juicy, sweet slices of goodness.

We bought a medium size seedless one last week at our Dillons/Kroger store. I do not know about where you live but it is not late enough in the season for a locally grown melon. Mine was probably from Mexico. I cut it and scooped all the flesh out to put in the fridge. Rind has gone to the compost.

I like watermelon. Haven't had any for awhile, but strawberries are in season now, and was just eating some of them..sweet and yummy.

I love watermelon. I was thinking it was a little early for them even in your area yet. That might be why it's shipped in.

Yes, I like watermelon but didn't even have any last season, Just not need for a large watermelon but this season I will get some cut up watermelon for a treat,

Finding the perfect-sized watermelon was a win, but the disappointment of it being imported overshadowed its taste. Supporting local produce often ensures fresher and more flavorful options.

I like all kinds of melons. I had some honeydew and cantaloupe from Meals on Wheels recently. No watermelon. Happy Mother's Day.
