I saw this commercial, and it blew my mind...

A law recently passed so that people can now create trust funds for their PETS. Is this not the MOST ridiculous thing you've ever heard. I'm not kidding. There was a news brief commercial discussing this and interviewing people on the street about it. We have people starving and living in the streets and pets get trust funds. What do you think of that?

I think it's hilarious. I'm just wondering what happens if the dog disputes the amount that the cat is getting, or if either of them don't like the way the money is being spent, or if the dog carks it and all of a sudden, three puppies arrive on the scene to claim his share. I wonder if the puppies tried to take it to court would they be told that they're barking up the wrong tree.

Gives the whole new meaning to putting money in the kitty! Sorry bad pun, on a serious note, nothing really surprises me anymore, well considering all the clothes you can get for animals, it stands to reason that a trust fund would be next. Well people do leave money to animals in their wills. I wonder if our oldest cat will leave his favourite toy to the kitten if he passes away. Face it the world's gone mad and we live in an asylum and it could only happen here on planet cuckoo, sorry planet earth!

You know...it may seem a bit out-there when you first hear the thought of a pet having a trust fund. When you realize that the pet took the place of children and family for the Pet Owner and really brought a lot of comfort and joy to the Owner, then hey.....Lucky Pet to have an Owner provide for its welfare when they're gone. I don't think there is anything wrong with setting up such a trust fund. Nothing can take the place of the Owner, but if anything the trust fund will bring peace-of-mind to the owner. Just knowing there's a plan for arrangements and care of their loved pet. Wish I could be so lucky.

I know a woman that adores her cat Arthur as if its her child. He brings her so much joy when he purrs at her. She takes him to the vet when he's ill and spares no expense. He's her life anymore, especially since she has retired. He's her best friend. I'm sure she's looked into plans for him if anything happens to her. My husband even has some friends our age that choose not to have children, but have 5 dogs instead and they treat them just like their children. Another couple friend of ours couldn't have children, they chose not to adopt and ended up adopting 2 cats. Something about animals. I couldn't stand cats or dogs, until my boys talked me into getting this cute little puppy "Buddy", he brought so much peace to our home. My youngest boy had difficulty sleeping at night until we got Buddy. I have to agree that some people may take advantage of such a trust fund, but there are other animal lovers out there that would dedicate there life to do what's right for the animals. It's just finding them.

It does sound ridiculous, especially as the pets will have no understanding of what this means to them, It could be just like pets wearing clothes and starting their first job and paying their bills and becoming more like us but will never be as they cannot talk and oh yeah here have a trust fund! Whats next unemployment benefit for dogs, A lottery for all animals!!

Now that would be nice! Maximum city allowance of pets for all! I think in city limits it's no more than 3. 7 1/2 years later, that's 3 SS checks for pets...hmmm...

No doubt. I love animals, I really do. I even understand the need for health insurance for pets (vet bills are unreall around here), but trust funds? I understand Melanie's point up yonder about not having anyone to care for a beloved pet after his/her demise, but come on, if you have no one, you must hire someone. Do people really believe that giving a hired hand power of attorney over their pets' estates is going to wash? That pet will be fed cheap food while the POA hired hand lives high on the hog... Now for your point, I can see it now: Now hiring: Pekinese & Chiuauas for visitor warning and ankle biting. -OR- The Catnip PowerBall: Is your pet entered to win millions? Good grief, Charlie Brown, what'll they think up next?

Hmmm.. I wonder if I could list my pets as dependents on our taxes? i really thinkg we're onto somethin here. Social security numbers for pets and benefits when they reach 65 in dog years.

Sounds silly, just the sort of thing that can happen in the U.K. Some people in the U.K. do leave money for their pets to be looked after. Now that there are talking cans as well then I suppose the next thing that will happen is setting up trust funds for them as well, especially those that have been left on the shelf.

I've already written a discussion about talking cans if you want to pop over and read it at http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/548400.aspx shows what this wonderful wordl is reducing itself to.

You aren't see nothing yet. Here people pay health insurance for pets. Besides, if you own dogs, you pay special tax depending on the number and the breed of the dog. I guess this is meant to keep this hobby to the buguoise.

Holy cow! A friggin tax on dogs? That is INSANE!! I can understand the health insurance, vet bills are pretty harsh around here, especially for a dog that has to have special meds, surgeries, etc...a TAX?!! I could just smack whoever passed that into law. Ridiculous--even more ridiculous than trusting a stranger to spend the money you left for your pet on your pet instead of himself. Just another way to gaffle money from the people.

That made me think of the movie Garfield 2 where in England there is another cat that looks like Garfield but he is a prince and his owner passes away and leaves everything to him....

I see it as a way for someone to make sure their pets are taken care of after they die. If they don't have family or a trusted friend, how else can they ensure their pets are taken care of? For some people, their pets are like their children. I'm sure it's a peace of mind to know they will be taken care of.

I hadn't thought about that. That would be sad to not have a trusted family member or friend that would take your pet for you. I know my chowchow was my kid, but had something happened to me & my husband, my sister would have taken him...he loved his Auntie, lol.

I have my insurance policy set up for my cats care. I also have someone I trust to care for them. As an alternative a rescue organization I am a member of will take them in so I have the money setup for their care. They are our children and we should care for them.

I wonder how many people actually take this seriously. There must be some if they are making enough money for a commercial. I bet that there are allot of wealthy people that consider this a good idea.

True. I appreciate your response. I'm thinking that the person who gets power of attorney over that pet is going to feed them generic food and spend the money on himself. I still say it's foolish tho.

I wonder what tax form the pets have to fill out? It's funny to me the stuff that we come up with. Granted, pets can be like family, but a trust fund? I think we have bigger worries in the world.

Yes, I think it is ridiculous. Pets and animals are here to server human beings, and there is a natural order that should not be broken. Seems like some of us human beings tend to place animals above where the nature has placed them.
