Ok, I think I can explain this. If you browse the internet, you will find the word "Avatar" is widely used. Forums, discussions, and community websites widely use the word "avatar" to describe a picture that refers to a person or members. The word "Avatar" in the Hindu philosophy means descent of god to earth in bodily form. Which means, a physical appearance which represents god. Take the word "represent" and connect it to the internet term. So avatar in internet term would mean, a picture/symbol (physical appearance) to "represent/refer" to a person, mostly the member of the group.

I have often wondered that, what the word avatar actually means, when I first joined I thoight it had something to do with the computer.:)
