Do you leave a tip in a restaurant?

It depends on the quality of service and food. If the food or service is horrible I don't leave a tip. Or sometimes we just don't go back.

I always tip in a restaurant unless the service is poor. I never tip on the quality of the food as the waitress/waiter has nothing to do with this. If the food is of poor quality, then I just won't go back to that restaurant. I tip usually 15% of the food bill.

I agree. How can you blame the server is the food is not good? They are not in the back cooking. I can see if you bring it to their attention about the food, and they don't do anything. I used to be a server, and if anyone ever said anything bad about the food, I always said sorry, but reminded them I did not cook the food, and always offered to replace it, if they said no,I would still let the manager know, as long as the customrer knew I was trying to help out, my tip was ok. :)

exactly! Do your best to help the situation & you cant be at fault. Ive found a few servers who have taken it personally and just go downright rude afterwards...at that point I feel no mercy. BUT Ive worked in restaurants before & know it's not easy dealing with people and their foods.

Yes I normally do give a tip when I go to a restaurant but that depends on the mannerism, service and of course the food but if everything is done like this of course I will give a tip that is worthy of the waitresses/waiter service to me. But if it is a bad service I will leave nothing and certainly would not recommend that restaurant to my family or friends.

I may not go back if the service is bad, but I ALWAYS leave a tip. The amount varies, depending on the quality of the service, but waitstaff make very little in salary and their tips are the biggest portion of their income. I would never let the quality of the food determine the tip -- after all, the server didn't cook it! :O) I usually leave about 20%.

I usually do, the amount of the tip depends on the service. If it was completely appalling then I don't leave one at all.

If the food is bad, it is not the servers fault, so why should the server be held accountable for the way the food is? I will let the server know if I do not like the food, and they offer to take it back, or the manager will come over and correct it. If the service is good, I leave a good tip. If the service is bad, well, I leave a bad tip, but let the server know. If the server is backed up, and they let me know, I am fine with that, as long as I am not ignored. Sometimes I will email the head office of a resaurant (good or bad) about my visit to the restaurant, and I find I get coupons in the mail from them (free soup or appetizer,or 1/2 off a meal.

I also think it depends on the service you get, if they are slow, dont refill your glass and ignore and basically give you bad service, they might get a dollar if anything at all. And I do tell the mgmt about it. Most work for tips and if they cant give good service they need to find another job. I do tip very well when I get good service though and I also let the mgr know the server/wait staff was great too!

I always leave a tip, the service of the person waiting on us and the quality of the food decide the AMOUNT of the tip that I leave though. The quality of the service more than anything. Mainly becuase they are just the servers and not the cooks. a sour attitude can spoil your experience. But I always leave a tip because it is after all how they earn their living. Not leaving a tip is just bad karma to me. I will leave the minimum if its a bad experience. But normally I do about 15% plus a couple dollars on top of that if they are really nice & service was good!
