Why do celebrities STEAL?

United States

It just drives me nuts everytime I turn on the news and see that another celebrity, or someone with tons of money, is stealing from a department store. I can't understand what they are doing. A part of me knows that it is because they become used to getting the things that they want, but it is just absolutely "eyebrow-raisingly" pathetic. I can't feel sorry for their "plight" as they see it, that they are not being thanked for "patroning" the store by trying to rob it blind. Really, where is their sense? It must have evaporated the second their heads inflated. You should hear me talking to my TV, when it is on the news. They are so pathetic. (Said conversation to the TV.-Stop people! Stop thinking that you don't have to pay for things just like everyone else, you are not better because YOU think you are. God, can you people get anymore pathetic?!!) Have I said pathetic enough? Really, they are...

They dont steal because of a lack of money, they steal for attention. They steal to make headlines. Or they steal because they have a problem. It is not so much pathetic as it is sad...obviously something is horribly wrong if they feel the need to steal, even though they have so much. They need help.

I agree with you. Many of them just want attention. It builds their publicity up. However, depending on which state they are in, and what connections they really have, many of them are not going to get off as easy as they used to. They really, really need help.

Yes, halfserious...they really do have distorted (and dellusional) ideas of their own grandeur.

I don't get it either. They have the money to buy what they want. Maybe they want attention. They don't even get in trouble for it either because they're celebrities. On E they were talking about lindsay lohan, how she goes to clubs for 21 and up and shes not even 21 yet..other under age kids were getting arrested, and it showed her coming out of the club but the cops didnt care. It's stupid.

It really is...there seems to be this wierd kind of idolization that people have for celebrities, and really, many of them are not "good people." There are some, that are really good people, and don't let their job, get to their heads, but then, there are those that are just crazy...thinking that they can do whatever they want. It makes absolutely no sense.

Speaking from a psychological standpoint, I think it's more the thrill and the ability to do something on their own. Their lives are, paparazzi aside, easy. But also very, very controlled. They're ruled by trainers, agents, publicists, directors, stylists, image managers... sometimes they lash out. It's almost a form of societal anorexia - they feel the need to take some sort of control. It's not socially acceptable, obviously, but it is an action of control.

Very interesting...and it totally makes sense. I "know" what you are saying, just never really thought about it. Unfortunately, I just cannot feel sorry for them. There are those of us, that are on the other spectrum, and yet, we don't fight back at society as they do, by stealing. We just save up for what we really want, or don't get it at all.

I didn't have a clue as to why someone with so much going for them would ruin their reputation by doing something so crazy.......thank you for the insight! :)This makes a lot of sense to me.

Well, some people steal because they are cleptomaniac they steal even if they dont need the item it is sortly just because they have an urge to do it. I guess thats the only explanation I have for you on that.

I agree with the first post on here. I think they do it to make headlines. I mean we all know Wynona has the money, but she was lacking the fame, so she decided to be bad to get back in print. I think it's also for the thrill as well. I think they want to see if they can get away with it. And if not, they probably feel like there aren't any consequences for them because they're celebrities. Which I think is extremely sad.

Well, pretty soon, they will start becoming accountable just like everyone else. There will be those mega-rich and powerful that escape the law, but they will get their due. I am a firm believer in "what goes around, comes around." So, it is only a matter of time.

Yes, I believe that their lives start becoming lackluster, and they no longer find excitement in buying the $5,000 pair of shoes, and so they just decide to steal them. Sometimes, some people just don't deserve what they have.

What a bunch of head cases some of these celebrities are! And like they don't get enough free stuff as it is. Did you happen to see what was in the gift bags at the Oscars and some of those other events? Hello....the stuff in those bags is worth enough to feed a family of 5 for a year or better. And the'y be eating steak every night. It is nothing short of pathetic.

Yes, I agree with you. They get so much free stuff, that it becomes absolutely frustrating to see that they want more. They start taking everyone and everything for granted.

Honestly, I never really hear of celebrities stealing, but then again, I don't pay much attention to news that relates to celebrities...mostly because of lack of time and I'm so busy with other stuff. What are some specific stories you have heard? I'm not in any way saying your lieing...I'm just curious. But yeah...I don't know why they would bother stealing when they could practically own every store!

i think that they don't steal because they're celebrities. it's the other way around. they steal but just happened to be celebrities that's why it's such a big thing. we hear about theft, robberies even, like everyday. but it just sounds more controversial if the thief happened to be a really pretty girl idolized by millions. then again, we just can't answer why they have to do that, they're filthy rich yet they steal.

That's a good point. However, as you know, it is annoying that they have the money to pay for everything in the store...and yet they steal anyways.

my friend, have you heard of the term Kleptomaniac before?? after going through your discussion i think you haveny come across this term before. well, this means its a mental problem where be it a common man or a celebrity, they are forced to pilfer and steal things from the shop. you should actually pity on then and they should be put on medications.

Celebrities steal because they suffer from a psychiatric illness called kleptomania. I think that's the only reason plausible for me. There are so many ways to get attention, and stealing is definitely not a wise choice. They can't control the "urge" and need to do it. It's the same with all the phobias and manias. They have to release the "tension" building up inside and need professional help.

well maybe they want to feel what is like to be caught in stealing in a department store or boutiques...or maybe they really are sick ..like klepto..

This is one of the reasons why the Paparazzi, tabloids and the media are drawn to such celebrity scandals like flies to lightbulbs and infrared radiation. Celebrities have enough money, they're rich, so it doesn't make any sense!

I know its like they have a million billion dollars and they HAVE to STEAL? I saw whats her name do it and its like huh? Dont you know you have the money for all that? Sheash! Celeb's! If I were that rich, I'd save my money for important stuff and buy things I wanted cheaper places. And NEVER EVER STEAL!

I really just think that they steal because they're bored, when their not acting, singing or getting drunk to the state where they are plastered all over international magazines and papers. Maybe they get a thrill out of stealing things, they are sadistic millionaires who don't know what to do with their free time.

well, some of them are kleptomaniacs. it's an illness that compells a person to steal things that do not necessarily have value. i'm not saying that all shoplifters are kleptomaniacs, but some of them are. and we shouldn't get angry at these people because they really can't help it.
