If I think cigarette smoking is repulsive, does that automatically mean I dislike people who smoke? and am bigoted and mean spirited?

Do you have friends that smoke, or do you feel they are worthless people. You are entitled to your opinion, but you should not hold grudges. People who do smoke should know ho you feel abut smoking and be nice enough to at least go somewhere else to smoke if they are with you.

No, I'm using it as an example. Guess I'm trying to point out that we really can't be expected to all think exactly alike. But if we do have something we do not whole heartedly find ourselves approving of, it should have nothing to do with how we treat that person or persons. But all should be treated with respect and acceptance. But is this the same as approving of all things?

Do you think this attitude should carry over into politics and social issues?

I have a few friends who smoke and I care for them but I couldn't help but sometimes feel angry at them. They're such healthy individuals so why are they looking for a reason to get sick. I have a friend who is paralyzed from the waist down due to an accident. She's also underweight and has to be assisted. When she accompanied me to hang out with my friends she was just furious that she lightly spoke with my friends these words... "you know ladies, you all are healthy individuals, but look at me. Can't you appreciate your health for once and at least have some self control over your worthless addictions!? It's bad enough you're thinking just about yourselves but what about the rest of us, I'm already paralyzed and do you think I need lung cancer to go along with it?! The way you've been going at it I guess I might even outlive you." Those were strong words, but righteous ones.

Only you can answer that question for yourself. Nobody else can answer it for you. In general, most people find it very difficult to differentiate between disliking and action/activity/habit/behavior/etc. and disliking the person. Some individuals, for various reasons, won't even try to differentiate and will lash out at anybody who expresses a dislike of an activity. So, whether it's smoking, drinking, sexuality, what have you, you will probably run into somebody who thinks you are attacking them rather than expressing an opinion about the activity. My $0.02 at the moment.

And a good $0.02 worth it was!
