I like the idea of a dress code(no uniforms but dress pants and solid color collared shirt. but it does not work like that . the low income children can not afford to buy the nice things that higher income families can. Some of the children do not like to wear the shirt tucked in or a belt, etc. and it stiffles their feeling of uniqueness. My son ended up quitting school because of the dress code. The principle said he was in his office moe than any other child. but 95 % of the time it was for dress code violation. once he got a pair of pants and the principle okayed them after he cut off a small pocket on the leg. The same pants got him sent home a couple of weeks later. I knew one more popular girl who would get up some mornings and think what can i wear to school and get away with breaking the dress code and she never! got sent home. One boy got sent home for not tucking in a sweater. Do you tuck in a sweater? and what about the children who are over weight? tucking in and wearing a belt will only add to the apperance of being over weight. If our school went to a uniform that he school supplied and the parents paid a fee for, maybe based on their wages, i think it would be better. Not a uniform like in the catholic, private schools but a little more laxxed and only a couple of different styles for them to chose.

Thanks for posting to my discussion I appreciate it. Have a good day! What you say is true. Alot of children over weight would suffer if they had to tuck because even though alot of the kids are nice they are always those few that are mean as rattlesnakes.

I dont mind the dress code, what I think is bad is when they are told how long their hair can be,what type of backpacks they have to use, whether or not the can wear earrings... the worst things in schools these days is the extremes, you cant take vitamins at school,it takes many forms filed just to give your child tylenol,if you draw a picture of anything vaguely pertaining to violence you are expelled, you cant pray or discuss your religion... there are many other things going on in our schools we should be focused on then weather or not our children should wear uniforms.

Well, to be honest I haven't made up my mind yet. For one thing, school uniforms would take some presser off kids that cant afford the name brands. On the other hand, it takes away from individuality. When I was in school, you had to stand up straight & hold your arms down to your side. If your shorts didnt come to the tip of your finger tips, it was a dress code vilation. I didnt mind that to much because I have short arms that come about 3" from my butt so i could pretty much were em as short as I wanted. But there was one girls whose fingers came down to her knees. She had to wear boys shorts or pants. (they simply dont make girls shorts that long.) So that wasnt really fair. Plus you werent suppose to have any clevage showing. I wore some of the lowest cut shirts you've ever seen & never got in trouble. But if someone that was on the heavy side or didn't have nice boobs wore a low cut shirt, they would have to change. That's probably because the principal and vice principal were both men. (this was in high school) I think it is stupid that they send kids home for a dress code vilation. I use to try my best to get a vilation just so I could go home. But then the vice principal decided that instead of sendin me home, he would take me to Wal-Mart (right down the road from school) & buy me some "appropriate" clothing. Which most of the time, they still violated the dress code. They had extra clothing at the school but I refused to were it because I said that i was afraid I'd catch body lice or something (just an excuse so they would let me go home really) I do think there needs to be some type of dress code but it needs to be fair to all. maybe uniforms are the best way to go.

Hey thanks for posting to m y discussion i appreciate it. I am glad I didn't have to wear a uniform when going to school. I mostly wore black and white my whole year of 9th grade. Clothes are like freedom of speech for some kids. We do have more rules and regulations in school dress codes now days then when I was going. I think that is because some kids are getting more wild in their choice of clothing nowdays.

i hate uniforms.especially the one my second school had yellow and greent hink about it how absurd!i would certainly want my children to express themselves differently when their generation comes.i think we need to have democracy imposed as early as school. i wouldn't want my kid to grow up and wear uniforms like a dork1

Actually, I am against school uniforms for the simple fact that all kids are different and have different personalities and they dress to express these personalities so to stuff them in a uniform would be to stuff out there individuality and imagination and personality the stuff that makes us what we are.

Yes this is true. Kids do express their self through the clothes they wear but that can also cause a problem with the ones who make fun of kids and what they wear if they are wearing the same thing them they can't make fun of the person for their clothes but kids can always find something they don't like about each other besides clothes.. My mother let me pick my clothing out most my life and I was glad to be able to choose my own clothing and I did express myself through my clothes. thanks for the response..

Uniforms are good for students at school level. They promote discipline and equality. Looks as if they are a group for a purpose. It also looks cute.

Thanks for your response to my discussion I appreciate it. It would seem that although parents love the idea alot of the children are against it just for the reason you stated that it promotes equality among them. Alot of children what to be different make a statement of who they are with the clothes they wear. Me I think that if they found more stylish uniforms maybe kids wouldn't think so bad of them. And maybe several differnet colors they could choose from during the week.

my daughter doesn't start school until september but i know of some of the dress code rules. i agree that young kids shouldn't wear tops that don't show their belly's or jeans that don't show underwear. your not there to show off your body your there to learn.

I don't think it's a good idea at all because all it does is try to take away the child's individuality. Also, they will never be able to "equalize" everyone because there will always be the child who wears the expensive jewelry or drives the expensive car. Uniforms can't eliminate children putting a status on other children. One other gripe that I have with uniforms is that they are now required in public schools, and I just don't see how this is feasible, when some children's parents can barely afford pencils and paper, and now they have to buy a certain type of uniform at a certain store, when they could have clothed their children for a lot more cheaply otherwise.

Especially since you would still have to buy regular clothing for after school wear. Maybe if enough parents got together they would rethink the uniform wearing for the children. Thanks for the response I appreciate it.

i'm for uniforms that are simple, and easy to afford. one charter school here uses jeans & school t shirt with sneakers. all items are affordable if you buy the non-designer, and if you need it, the school should subsidize it.

I think they need to be more concerned about the kids education instead of the clothes as long as they are not exposing there private body parts.

Thanks, I appreciate your response to my discussion. It is true about education being more important but with the way society is today and how kids can be cruel about what others are wearing because they can't afford the name brand clothes and all I just thought with uniforms it would solve one problem some schools are having problems with. Thanks you.

I would like to know exactly what my kids school's dress code is. At one point they were talking about uniforms but that was voted out. The boys aren't supposed to wear hats in class, but it seems to be at the teacher's discretion. I can't even begin to figure out where they stand on hair or tshirts that say certain things. It'd be nice if they would put the code in writing, but they never have.

Thanks for responding to my discussion I appreciate it. Yes, it would be more simpler to know what it what and what can be worn and what cannot. Our school cannot wear shirts with sayings on them, but we have no rules about hair. My brother once had his head shaved into a mohawk once principle didn't like it at all told him that it didn't represent the school in the right light and ask him to shave it all off but he kept it a week before he did. Kids at school loved it and thankfully it didn't start a trend at school.

sometimes. our school just recently implemented a uniform policy for the first time for boys and everybody went nuts. personally, i have nothing against wearing uniforms but im just against our school uniform since it really looks so bad. it doesn't fit the color of the school and its design is really bad.

I think if they were going to force them to wear uniforms then atleast they could do is find colors the fit the school colors so that they represent the school. And also find a pattern that most the kids will agree with. Maybe taking out a petition would help them in choosing better. Thanks for the reply I appreciate it.

i didn't have dress code at my school..besides no short shorts..or flip flops. But they did try to implement a school uniform...it didn't happen. I don't know that it is a good idea to make everyone dress the same way, kids like to be different & show there own style. Some people in my town brought up the idea that making kids wear a uniform would make the poorer kids feel better because they would be wearing the same thing as the preppy students. I don't think this would work, i think that there would still be groups & people making fun of other people. theres my 2 cents
