Only white women in black videos

I often see music videos with black musicians and women that are either white, light colored hispanics and very few blacks. I wonder how black women feel about this? I have seen little girls talk about being "bright" meaning that they are light skinned and being very worried that they conform. It is sad that with all of the history that blacks have had to deal with prejudice to see it in within themselves. The more successful the black man the lighter skinned the mate. In movies it happens almost all of the time. I am surprised more black women dont talk about this issue. What do you think?

To pander to the white majority, this has been going on since the MTV era where a lot of black music videos will have white women. Speaking of that, who remembers that Roots video where they were parodying rap videos and in that one scene they had a white woman with the words "white token" on the screen? LOL!

Are you serious? Most of the girls in rap and R&B videos are black. I noticed the exact OPPOSITE thing you said. Are you sure you're watching real music videos?

I think I know what you mean. While they do have more black women in music videos than maybe you've seem to have seen there is a penchant for light is right in music videos of black males. It seems like more and more bm artists like to have exotic or white women featured in their videos with a few true black women in the background. While they are putting more and more lighter skinned girls of every race in their videos white artist still mainly put white women in their videos so there is no balance really. You would think at least bm artists would put mostly black women in there videos like most white artists put mostly white women in their videos, but this is not the case. So the balance is shifted in favor of more European, mixed, or Brazillian looking women and darker skinned black women get left out a lot. In one sense, the videos are so degrading that you don't really want to be represented in them but then you realize that these women are the ones considered to be beautiful by the artists and when you are not represented, someone with low self esteem my be upset by this. I think it is sad how damaged black people and especially black males can be when it comes to skin color but if we don't acknowledge it then we will never move past it. Good topic.

Yeah I have wondered this a lot. There are actually a lot of black women who do discuss this. While I don't mind the fact that less black women are being portrayed this way in music videos, it still makes me wonder why is it that most of the black women on television are lighter in skin tone or the rappers in the videos go for lighter black women, light colored hispanics or white women etc. I don't really know why it's like that but I don't care about it anymore! I have also wondered why is that every time I see a black man, his wife is lighter than him... Now I know skin tone is just a color and some people really don't see that there is anything special about this situation and that it doesn't really need much attention but if you're very observing you'll notice that that's just how it currently is these days. Sometimes, in movies, the darker skinned black women get the "ghetto, loud, baby momma" role and a lot of the more "intelligent, successful black women" roles are given to lighter skinned black women with long beautiful hair. It just is what it is. Luckily, these stereotypes are not true because I know I don't fit into these roles at all... That's why I personally love the roles that Gabrielle Union plays in most movies! Otherwise.... hmm... I don't really think it's all that serious because that's just how our culture is. We always shift around at what's "in". Take a look at what body shape/size is "in". There was a time when models had full, curvy bodies and that's what everyone wanted to be. Now models are skinny sticks and that's what a lot of little girls want to be. What about hair for black women? There was a time when straightening your hair was a must..... these days, more black women (look at the commercials and you'll see) are walking around showing off their natural hair..... well some of them anyways, there are a lot of the younger ones who know how to work that weave! lol.... In my perspective... there will always be some type of prejudice in everything, that's just how it is. It's quite probably that one day light women will not be the center of attention in music videos but it'll shift to some other type of women...
