I'm a great lover of mythology...was practically weaned on it as a kid and learned of the mythologies of the greeks, egyptians, celtic, norse, etc...so it's interesting that in almost every culture..no matter how diversely had their forms of elves, brownies, unicorns, dragons, pixies..etc...It's been said that all myths/legends are based in some kind of fact...so in your opinion do you think that maybe these so -called mythical creatures actually did exist in some form?

I do think that some existed. I also will go further and say that some still do. I believe they exist on a different plane that us and that in places of high density they're easier to see. Such as in Ireland (very misty) it's common to see ghosts, spirits, and even fairies (from what I hear). There are other instances of different types of myths and legends from other areas of the world as well. That's what I believe anyway LOL. Just curious though - what's a brownie? I don't think I've ever heard of that one.

Brownie's are a type of elf. If you ever read the story of the Shoemaker and the elves where they did his work at night, these were actually supposed to be Brownies. You can read more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownie_%28elf%29

i lean toward dragons strongly-it's very possible it's at the very least a dinosaur/bird relative. with all the world practically having a form of dragon legend, there has to be something to it. could be an unidentified pterodactyl/archaeopteryx relative within human memory.

Don't be so scientific about it. Just believe in the magic...

I think that at least small part of it is based on real facts. I am reading many stories over and over and I start thinking that many animals no longer exist on Earth. In other hand many magical creatures may still exist in different dimension. It is proved that we have 30 or more dimensions in Universe...

I agree with GnosticGoddess that I do think they existed at one time and possibly still. The legends are too broad and wide spread. They exist as you pointed out in just about every culture in one form or another. That tells me that the legends had to be based in some way on fact. The legends might have very little to do with the reality of them after so much time but I do think the legends started from something. It could be they are among us. Using magic to not be seen or as GnosticGoddess stated living on a different plane from us. They could be at a slightly different time as us as well so that we don't see them. Sort of like the one Star Trek where Kirk was going at a much faster speed so he was invisible to the crew and only sounded like a buzz near them. It could be like that. Either way though I do think they had to have existed in one form or another at one time.

I love the responses from both of you GnosticGoddess and emeraldisle---yes, I believe that there are magical beings who really do still exist but for the most part most of us can't see them..although maybe those who are psychically sensitive might see or sense them--there is one tradition of Wicca --the faerie tradtion for instance that does believe in faeries...and don't laugh I started reading up on this tradition...if you want to attract then to you place a small bowl of milk..as they love it...I did this..uh, the only one who drinks the milk is my cat Pyewacket!! LOL

I think a lot of mythology was created to absolve humankind from responsibilities for their own actions. Especially in the case of the ruling class, they could not accept fault for anything, so creat a god or goddess to blame in some manner. Over time a lot of the myths became teaching tools to make better decisions and create better life styles. As with everything, there is always a shred of fact in the fiction

I too am a fan of mythology. I have done some studying on my own because I find the subject so fascinating. I think that it takes a special kind of person to find an interest in things you mention. Everyone is not able to suspend belief and allow for the unexpected or unknown to creep in. I feel that the mythological creatures had to have existed in some form. Practically everything that we have ever heard of and considered unbelievable must be, somehow, based on fact. I am constantly devouring every book I can get my hands on to learn all that I can. There is also a good radio talk show that I listen to that sometimes has guests come on to discuss these types of things. They are very knowledgeable. The show has a website: coasttocoastam.com.

This is what is keeping any faith alive - true believers. What you believe IS true...Strange, I just earlier post if anyone read Weaveworld by Clive Barker. Did you? If ever in doubt - read that and your believe will be reconfirmed

One of my favorite movies is the 2003 version of Peter Pan...everytime I watch that, I swear I walk around my apartment saying "I do believe in fairies, I do, I do!" ;-)

I don't want to burst your bubble honey, but, I really doubt it. Humans tend to stretch the truth, and that is what I think is the facts of magical creatures.

Awww...marieanneart..tsk..tsk..you mean you don't believe in at least elves or fairies? There's a wicca tradition that is based on the faerie folk..And it does seem odd that so many cultures have similar beliefs unless its a collective consciousness thing

The Gamayun - One of the 3 prophetic birds in Russian folklore
Oh I was practically weaned on mythology too! My Mother was from Belarussia, so along with the Norse, Celtic etc., I had my fair share of Slavic myths to grow up with too - fearsome tales of the "zmey" (7-headed dragon) and the FireBird. I honestly believe some of these creatures did exist, and I also think, in some form, they still do. |Since early childhood I have always wanted to see a unicorn - I think they are so beautiful - sadly, so far, I have not.I spent some years living on the Ise of Skye, and there is a definate mystical, "other worldly" feel to that place. By the way - if you are interested - the picture is of the Gemayun, which is the greatest of the 3 Birds of Prophecy in Russian/Belarussian folklore.

I hope you enjoy it! I warn you it can be very grusesome at times though - lots of ritual sacrifices, monsters, and many de-flowered virgins!!!

I have always believed that dragons were real, not just in my imagination either. Cultures across the world have pictures and tales of dragons, they must have existed in some form in order for the pictures and stories to exist.

We have this Mountain area down by the orange river. Its called the Richtersveld. Most of this area is totaly unhabitable, No water, no shade - just scorching heat and extreme cold. There are lots of places no man has ever set foot. I believe the dragons are there in hibernation or something. Hiding away till the time is right for them to fly the earth again....

Unicorn and Pegasus - I beautiful picture of a black unicorn and white pegasus. Both beautiful creatures of (myth?)
I think it is really cool to think that at some point in time mythological creatures did exist. In fact, I hope very strongly that they did. I think it would be cool to know that elves, unicorns, pegasus' and other creatures really did exist!

Mythology, folk tales, and fairy tales probably had a big influence on my mental development, but I never believed that magical creatures ever existed. And today I know enough psychology and anthropology to understand why people would believe in such things. It's part wishful thinking, part imagination, and part the tendency of the average human mind to combine ignorance and the need to explain the mysterious.

I dont see how soething that appears in so many different cultures cant be based on a true thing. take Unicorns for example, ho wmany different cultures have unicorns in them? same for dragons, fairies, elves, trolls? wasnt there a movie with john ritter and it was about a magical relm hwere magi still lived,bt was thretened by humans who didnt believe in magick anymore? i dont know what it was that someone called us who can see fairies, but call us what you want,I have seen fairies,i know they exisit,i,m not nuts or anything like that, but i know they are amoung us,and some of us are choosen to bring what they teach to the human world, before its to late,ok now i osund like a nut,but its true. anyone who doesnt believe is intitled to their oppinions as i am mine. I DO believe in fairies!
