Do setbacks discourage you or inspire you to work harder?

I am sure at some time in our life, we have encountered some sort of set backs.
Be it a small one or a big one, it is still a set back.
It can be anything, from failing your school quiz to losing your job.
Do you let that set back discourage you from re-doing what ever you have failed so that you can do it better the next time?
Or do you become more determined to get a even better success at what ever you failed at in the next attempt?

An obstacle will remain an obstacle if we let it remain there. If we take it as a challenge, we'll challenge it to overcome itIt's all about perspective. Although things are always easier said than done, I've observed that if we do not have a proper attitude to handle setbacks or failures, they'll normally eat into us & it will manifest in our daily lives. It's like a rotting fungus or disease, something like thatSetbacks? I just watched Meet The Robinsons, hahaThere's a good moral story behind that

Yeah... I like the way you put it. Set backs are like obstacles. Just like driving on the road. If the tree were to fall across the road, and cut of access to the destination you are going to, then it must be removed. Otherwise, an alternative route have to be made in order to reach the destination.
If we allow the tree to stop us, then we will forever be standing where the tree has fallen. And moaning about how the tree is an obstacle is not going to make the tree go away.
Good one there my friend!

All i can say is, NEVER BACK DOWN!! lol =D Because there's no point in giving it up when one knows that we will be facing the same thing in the future again.. THus, i will be even more determined to break the obstacle and keep on challenging myself.. haha =D
That's what life is about.. Keep challenging and strive to do even better than expected.. When we succeed in that, the rewards we have at the end of it, will also be much more than what we expected intially.. lol =D
Just like me, i'm always striving to break my personal best in my 5km run, and till date, i can easily run 5km in just 20m35s.. haha =D But that's still not enough for me, i'm trying to break it under 19min, and slowly bring it to 16min or so.. lol =D

That is good and positive attitude you got there!
Yes, facing a set back and treating them as challenges is the way to learn. The way to move forward and also the way to better things.
It is good that you have this kind of mindset. And together with your youth and energy, you will go far my friend.
You will go really far in life!
Keep it up my friend!

Well I would love to say that they inspire me to work harder all the time, but I'm just human. As a rule if it's a setback related to outside issues ( work, people I know, something I am doing etc ) I tend to be inspired to work harder more than discourage. If it's a setback related to my family, my relationship with them, or in any way related to the small circle of my immediate family - kids and hubby - I seem to discourage more often for some reason.
It's kind of odd, but it happens this way. True, because I am aware of this I try to correct it, but still it happens more frequently this way.

Hmm... interesting reactions you got to setbacks.
I would have thought that no matter how or who that setback is related to, when faced with it, one would deal with it in a similar way regardless.
But you, you have two seperate standards of dealing with them.
Interesting! Very interesting indeed!
Thanks for sharing my friend!

Victories and setbacks are both part of life. You really can't win them all can you? We have to learn to take setbacks in our stride and learn a thing or two from each setback and emerge stronger. I take it as a positive sign and hope that next time i will be able to sail through with ease.

That is a very optimistic view to have.
And a good one too. Considering that life is always having its ups and downs.
Yes, we can treat the set back as a stepping stone to better things.
Or let the weight of it stagnate us for the rest of our lives.
It is a choice we ultimately have to make.

I used to become easily discourage when I was faced with a setback, but now, I look at thngs a whole lot differently and when faced with a setback, I push forward that much harder. I look at things in a positive light and try to learn from everything. I have been through enough setbacks that more often than not, I am able to say, "Well, I have been here before and I know how to handle it this time." Or, "Things could be a lot worse" It really tok me a long time to get to the point where every little setback doesn't bother me as badly, but all for the better.

Believe it or not my friend. That is growth and maturity that you are talkinga bout there.
With each set back we face, as long as we face them and learn from them, we come out of it a better person than before.
That is why there is no denying the benefits of overcoming setbacks can bring!

Yes I am sure we all have encountered some setbacks .The truth is all willa fect our egos and slef esteem at least for a while but it is how we deal with it after that initial set back.Sometimes when we encounter setbacks it is either because we have done something wrong and need to change our approach or give up totally and pursue another dream.I know that many persons may take issues with me saying give up on your dreams but sometimes we are not competent to pursue that dream and have greater talenst in another area so this could be our cue to start pursuing a new dream
On that other hand there are some disappointments that should encourage us to try harder at teh same dream ,it all depends on how much we really want this dream an whether we still believe taht we can achieve it .There is no easy answer we just have to keep trying and keep an open mind

I am sure initial feelings of discouragement and sadness in facing a set back is what every one feels.
As long as you can over come it and do better the next time, that is what is important.
Rather than wallow in self pity, you actually take steps to turn the situation around. To learn from the set back and them improve upon how you handle the set back is some thing that is both commendable and amirable! And if one is able to keep an open mind to that, it would be even better!

I've been through both and the it's the nature of them and the intensity which have decided whether it has brought out the determination or not. Lesser significant ones have made me determined and i've found the determination help me accomplish a lot. The ones which have hit me hard, i've found difficult and as much as i've tried to be determined, there are times that i find myself being dragged down again. In some instance i've found that life does not give you second chances.

Life never give second chances. It is you who make second chances happen.
Cos if you do not get up from a set back, then where comes the second chance?
Second chances comes in many forms. It may or may not be attempts at the same task. But if you open your eyes and listen, and open your ears and see, second chances are all around. It is whether you are observant enough to grab them!
Like you, I too find some set backs a little tough to handle. But we still have to. Even if we have to chisel at it a little bit at a time, we will do it. So that we can bounce back a better person who is a little wiser at handling similar situations that led to the set back in the first place.

Most of the time I feel discouraged but stubbornly press on anyway.
Rarely do I ever feel encouraged or inspired by setbacks, but I'm one of those people who doesn't like to be accused of giving up easily. I re-examine, I re-avaluate, I try to come up with creative solutions..and I press forward.

I'm not going to lie my first reaction is to be discouraged. And I tend to get discouraged pretty easily. But after I realize it's not as bad as I'm thinking it is then I get right back up and keep moving and keep trying. And then I become determined to prove to myself I can do it.

For me they have a dual impact. Sometimes they tend to discourage me but sometimes I do tend to get motivated by the setbacks. It fills in a lot of more energy and enthusiasm into my life.

I have been through so many set backs that I don't even recognize them as setbacks. I encounter a problem that needs to be solved and you just keep on trudging through. If you have given up the will to live then you let it get you down. I have two children and I will keep on keeping on. I hope everyone has an easy life and really it is the way you look at life as to whether it is easy or hard.

Precisely! If you put on the glasses that sees everything as an obstacle in life, then life will be really tough!
But if you put on the mindset that obstacles are there to test your skills, and overcoming them will lead to better things, then life is much much easier.
There is no one in this world who never suffered a set back at one time or another.
IF they can get back up on their feet, so can you!
Good that you have your two kids to keep your sense of direction in life. I am sure overcoming any obstacles and set backs that life has thrown you will all be worth while when you see your kids growing up, stronger each day.

I for one never never surrender to setbacks in life, in fact any setbacks will only motivates me to work harder to reach my goal in life. One good example is here in mylot. I was enjoying the glamorous 10 star when I was suddenly dragged down to my present star. Being a person who doesn't bow to setbacks I did not end my activities in mylot instead it motivates me to prove my critics wrong that I am not a lame person and is able to accept what ever hard knocks put on me. One rule that seems universally applicable is that there will always be some events over which we do not have a personal hold, but our attitude towards them is our own creation and, therefore, the right attitude lies in our hands. What ever setbacks, we have to take it as a fact of life. Our attitude should be of acceptance of the fact that it has happened and we should try to find the remedy instead of feeling upset or shaken an losing the courage to face the challenge.

hmm set backs don't really do anything to me. i mean of course i get upset. especially when i've put in a lot of effort. however, i don't get the discouraged or determined part. i just pick myself up after a set back and move on. i don't feel particularly determined to do better next time. well maybe at the time of the set back i do feel a little of that. but the next day when i wake up the determination is gone already.

So, you are one of those who will just move on and not look back.
That is one way to deal with setbacks as well.
Much better than those who get crippled but them.
And I really mean crippled by these set backs, so much so, they keep living in that miserable time and not able to get out of it.

That is the way to go. For what is a journey to success if there are no set backs to make the trip more exciting eh?
Good that you have this kind of positive outlook. Keep it up and you will be seeing a whole lot more of successes than you think you have!

I go through a process. When a setback arises, I often feel discouraged because it was unexpectanct and I am only human. But I do not give up and I still keep on pushing towards my goal because that is just how life is and you need to make do with what you have instead of being consumed by the problem. I am a firm believer that through difficulty lies opportunity and that when one door closes another will soon be opened. If you accept defeat, you will be defeated. No matter what, you must have faith and hold on in order to achieve what you want.

Well if you failed once try it again and make it better and work harder to avoid failure. But speaking of set backs at work in terms of salary pay cut, i think i should really feel discourage and seeing no chance to progress, i will find another job. But for school works, you have a chance to make urself better and knowlegeable.
Happy posting.
