Do you think landlines are still important?

I don't really think landlines are important anymore since mobiles are rampant. Everyone has a cellphone (well most do) and even business have their own cellphone number. But then again, there are advantages of having landlines because you can't really talk long through mobile phones due to battery shortages. But then again, why not just visit the person if you plan to talk longer? What do you think?

We felt the same way and disconnected our landline. But today morning, I realized the disadvantage (for us). We have two kids (aged 9 and 3) and sometimes the 9 year old is left at home...while we go out with our work and stuff to do. It's not for long....but he might need to call or contact us. I don't think giving him a cell phone is a good idea(he'll just end up playing games on it when we aren't home). Since it just struck me this morning, I haven't planned what to do about it. We have 3 cell phones....2 that my husband carry and one for me. But we don't always go out together and so we can't really leave the extra one that my husband has with our son. It's not daily that this need arises...but it does happen once a week atleast.

No :( Our old number has been given to an institution near by and my husband still doesn't see the necessity of a landline. The way he sees it, we are paying much less for phone calls with 4 sims to the house. He plans to get another cell phone for the home....but I do not approve of our 10 year old having a cell phone. I find it hard enough to keep him away from my phone and the applications. Imagine him having one of his own. I'm not worried about the calls because I know he is responsible about it. But I don't like him playing the games and using the other applications (even with basic models, there is atleast one game).

I know how you feel. We also disconnected our landline and now that we have done so, I have realized the discomfort of having no landline. There are businesses around which only have landlines and calling from my cellphone to these landlines are quite a task and quite expensive as well. Further, it's difficult to just leave people or know the situation at home when the owners of the cellphones are not home. I guess we can only see the disadvantage of such decisions when we have already made them. Do you think you'll reconnect your landline any time soon?

Mobiles operate on batteries and when the electricity is out for a long period after a storm or other disaster and you can't charge the mobile you would be grateful for the landline.

Yeah it's true. These phones are only good until their batteries start waning off or become obsolete or be destroyed since it's parts are too fragile. I guess landlines are good because you don't need to maintain those types of phones all the time.

The only real problem with a land line most of the time is periodically replacing the cord.

My husband and I both have cell phones, but only use them for important calls when we are away from home. When we are home, we only use the land line unless there is a problem if a storm should knock out the lines. The land line is cheaper to use, offers features like caller I.D., call waiting and services for the deaf if you require it. Also there are some services that require you to use a land line only, like filing taxes or even calling the unemployment office to report in. We also get unlimited calling local and long distance for less money per month than most people pay for their cell bill and because we bundle our service with cable and internet, we get even a lower rate.

oh yeah, I think it's the costs that motivates us to keep our landlines.

I know so many people that just use cell phones now, my husband and I included. We got rid of our landline about a year and half ago. Saving money on a landline is nice, but we get bad reception with our cells sometimes where we live, so that can be a pain for long conversations. I read a few weeks ago on Yahoo that landlines are something that may be done away with within the next few years. I think people should still be allowed to have the option though.

The excessive charge of landline phone just not practical anymore, and we don't have to pay that much. Just imagine since majority of us have a cellphone on hand, and we simply give our cell phone numbers to your friends, a landline just waste of money per month. Plus, we have DSL at home, and VOIP is the most economic way to talk through fast internet too. So, landline probably extinct soon.

I don't think so since in times of power outages, the only thing that doesn't required power to be used is the landline. Further, cellphones generally have signal or network problems. I think it's still safer to have a landline at home.

I think they are still important. Its just that people arent using them in the manner they use to. I do have friends and family that use there cell phone as a home phone as well. Landlines are so much cheaper than cell phones. If you dont pay your total cell phone bill they shut you down. If you pay at least a little bit of you landline bill they usually dont shut you down. I think that in the end its better to use your cell phone when you're out of the house and landline when you're in the house. Just my opinion. dl

Landlines are still important. Remember if you cell goes or a tower goes you will have no phone. If you loose your phone no one can get ahold of you. Ainge

I have realized that they are still important regardless the ease of mobiles. I guess landlines are stable lines and regardless what happens (as long as you keep on paying them) you could be found or contacted by anyone. Shows stability, I guess. Thanks for the response, have a great mylot experience ahead!

I much prefer to use landlines. They cost less, they can't (usually) be heard on other folks' radios (& I've heard some...INTERESTING conversations that bleed onto mine! I NEVER give out personal info when I'm forced to use a mobile!). And besides all that, I can't afford batteries to keep the silly things going. I wouldn't mind having a mobile strictly for emergencies while on the go...say, a flat tire at night on a dark & lonely road...(Brrrr! I scared myself! ), but you can have your mobile if you want it, just allow me my cheap, trusty land line! Maggiepie "WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?"

I think it's really logical to have landline phones because they're still really reliable. The batteries of our mobile are really ridiculous but we can't blame them because of the features that we've demanded for those little things. However, in my life right now it's rare that I use the landline. Rare in the sense that it's only my parents who keep using them because most of my friends would just txt or call me on the mobile - not even often, usually it's just txts. But yeah, everything has uses. I guess the most important use of landline phones is the fact that you can use them when the power is out or the signal is distorted because of the weather. We experienced a huge catastrophe a few days ago and the mobile phone's signal was really a pain. But the trust landline was up and atom. Thanks for the response, have a great mylot experience ahead!

Aren't landlines suppose to be more secure than cell phones? If I order something over the phone, I will only do it on a landline.

Hi laydee How are you today? I do think that landline phones are still needed and important. I live in an area where we don't have cell phone service. So I really need that house phone. Where I use to live there was cell phone service it was cheaper in the long run to still have that landline phone. One more reason is in case of emergency. If you call from a cell phone it doesn't show up the location that you are at. If you have a landline then it shows the address where you are right so the emergency crews can get to you..Have a great day laydee and keep smiling..

Landline phone is there for more than 23 years in my house and I strongly feel that it's a must.It is the first contact number we provided for our friends and family long back. Both my dad and mom uses mobile phones and they still prefer landlines for STD and International Calls.Just a month back many mobile phone operators are bring out cheap tariffs for STD calls. When we are using prepaid services, chances are there that we may end up loosing our balance.Landlines are must even though usage of mobile has stormed into the consumer market.

My view: phone has the advantages of mobile phones, convnient, small, beautiful, fashion, basically canbe uesd anywhere,in my country, with the 3G network construction and development, are being constantly inproved, heera, youcan as face to face video chat, Internet speed is faster, better support for multimedia and online entertainment. However, while mobile pgone battery is being constantly limited, if in an emergency, when mobile phone no electricity, then it is a very troublesome thing. At this point, there is no way and fixed phones on a par. Terms from the radiation, cell phone radiation, after all, is relatively large, relatively speaking,if the phone along time chatting, then the brain is very no good for pregnant women and infants and young children who, in order to avoid radiation damage to them, is best not to use a mobile phone, fixed telephone id a good communication tool.

I don't think landlines are important...I know they are! Heck, if it wasn't for my land line I wouldn't be online. Yep, I'm on dial-up. So even though I don't use my land line phone much for talking I do rely on it for my computer. Land lines are good to have, even with most people having cell phones. Cell phones tend to cut out more, so you might be in a middle of a conversation when the cell phone drops the call. I've also had people not be able to hear me when using my cell phone. I'm guessing because there was some sort of interference on my end. It can be very irritating to say the least, especially when it is an important call. Happy mylotting!

Yes they are and I use the land line more than I use my mobile. In fact I only carry a mobile for emergencies when I am travelling. I always used my land line at home for any phone call. I think mobiles are just too expensive to use for every call and if I want to talk to my brothers I always call on the land line or use email or voip. As for visiting them for long talks that is just not an option as they live too far away and I cannot afford the plane fair. We also use the same cable for our internet as we do for our land line so it is far more important to us than the mobile phone.

hi mylotters!!! in my opinion the advent of mobile phones is increasing rapidly n everybody has a mobile phone but still i think it's very important that one should have a landline connection as mobile has so many demerits such as short batteries storage n it harmful rays also affects us a lot n cause so many problems n diseases such as dumbness etc...n still some companies prefer landlines only........

There will be no signal problems in land line phones and no confusion about our brains being hurt. And there are still old people who can't get accomodated with cell phones. The numerous futures in a cell phone is a real mystery for them.More than that we have to have our broad band connection through land line phones alone.Cheers!

Yes, they are, what would have happened if there was no signal or if the network is down for the mobile phones. no way they can't be allowed to be dismantled. with out land lines or should we say telephones, we wouldn't have a chance to at least for a back up communication system if the mobile phones are down.

Of course they are! Landlines are very important when cell phone network does not work or if there is a jam.
