How to attain Perfect Exposure when shooting Indoors or outdoors

I am still learning to attain a perfect exposure on my DSLR. But have failed to attain it in my camera a lot of times. Some one who has some tricks upto his sleeves to help me in this aspect.

Nikon D80 Usage

I have just started to use Nikon D80 DSLR... Dont know much about other lenses on it .. but am using Dx 18-200mm VR lense with it... This Kido gives brilliant result when doing outdoor daylight shoots... but need help and advise...
