deadly hawaiian monk seal - these little known killers attack and drown surfers and swimmers here monthly. it is a hidden fact that these animals weighing up to 400 pounds, the males being highly territorial, and protective of a beach they lay claim to will attack anything they presume to be a threat. animal rights activists, green peace and others have worked to hide this fact, while all of us who live here find out quick how dangerous these cute seals are, the tourists are the ones who pay the price. one to five a month are attacked resulting in 5 to 15 fatalities a year. i think they should post signs like they do when sharks are present. but the consensus is, that might spark hunting the creatures again. i say good riddance to these dangerous animals. i mean how would you like to be swimming and have a four hundred pound seal try to exclude you from his beach, or worse mistake you for a female, and try to mate with you in the surf. the later causes the most drownings. anyway watch out for the monk seal if your in the islands. mahalo to all, oahu lopaka
